Accordingly, on 13 September 1964, at the request of the Republic of Vietnam, the Republic of Korea deployed the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and instructors.
Korea's entry into the war in Vietnam showed the world that while Korea was not directly affected by the war it was, nevertheless, willing to go to its neighbor's assistance.
Since Korea had received US assistance for so many years after the Korean War and had followed American tutelage on the organization and leadership of a large armed force, the Vietnam War was an opportunity to show that Koreans could operate on their own without American forces or advisers looking over their shoulders.

Paik Sun Yup served as Republic of Korea (ROK) Army Division and Corps Commander and Army Chief of Staff during the Korean War.
Born in the small town of Kangseo, approximately 17 miles west of Pyongyang, North Korea, Paik finished his studies at Pyongyang Normal School, graduated from Manchuria’s Mukden Military Academy in 1941, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Manchurian Army.

It would be the most massive "hostage taking" in history, would steal the crown jewel and capitol of Korea, solve the N. Korean supply problem etc. The ROK would hesitate to attempt to recapture Seoul by force if it would be reduced to rubble, and would likely negotiate a new arrangement.

A company in Korea would be sized and equipped to fit the needs of that theater but would not be structured and equipped the same as a unit, say, in Germany.
