Dissatisfaction with the HBC was widespread among the settlers, and on May 31, 1868, Thomas Spence of Portage La Prairie declared himself President of the Republic of Manitoba, which also comprised what would become the province of Alberta, and a good chunk of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories to boot.
