In Mozambique, the military decision to withdraw occurred within the context of a decade of armed anti-colonial struggle, initially led by American-educated Eduardo Mondlane, who was assassinated in 1969.
Mozambique's decision to enforce UN sanctions against Rhodesia and deny that country access to the sea led Ian Smith's regime to undertake overt and covert actions to destabilize the country.

Mozambique is mainly a rural society, the largest cities being the capital, Maputo (1.132,000), Beira (294,000) Nampula (232,000) and Quelimane (145,000).
There is a wide variety of ethnic groups in Mozambique: The population is mainly Tsonga and Changane in the South, Sena in the Centre, Nyanja in the north-west, Macua (the largest linguistic group), Yao and Nyanja in the north and Maconde in the north-east.
