Brazilian real - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The real became Brazil's official currency in 1690, and it would remain as such until 1942, when it was replaced by the cruzeiro at a rate of 1000 réis = 1 cruzeiro.
The real was affected by inflation during its long lifespan and the base currency unit shifted from one real to mil réis (one thousand réis) and to one conto de réis (one million réis) in the final years of the República Velha era.
One conto de réis was represented by the symbol Rs written before the value and by a dollar sign.

The wealth generated by the rubber boom is still evident in the shape of the modern city, whose elegant central avenues lead from the luxuriant Praca da Republica down to the port, past a historical sector which is replete with Portuguese colonial architecture.
Always warm and often hot (and often wet, too), the climate is generally very pleasant, with an average temperature of 25°C. Belem remains the economic centre of the North, and the chief port for the Amazon.
The Praca da Republica, an attractive central park with plenty of trees affording valuable shade, is a perfect place from which to get your bearings and start a walking tour of Belem's downtown and riverfront attractions.

Beginning with the establishment of the “Old Republic,” Brazil’s political history is a roller coaster sequence of events and crises that reflect the aims of factions and individuals.
he “Republica Velha” was dominated by a single political party who in turn commanded all three branches of the federal government.
Headed by the governors of the Brazilian states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, this party continued unchallenged, until 1930 when the “Old Republic” was forcibly overthrown by a revolutionary force under the leadership of Getúlio Vargas.

The Second World War, and more particularly, the German submarine blockade of the Atlantic, prevented European books, mainly those from France, from reaching South America.
Book production inside Brazil increased substantially after Getúlio Vargas' nationalist insurgents in 1930 defeated the forces of the República Velha and, despite an unstable economic situation right through the 1930s, continued increasing right through the period of the Second World War.
The government's ensuing policies had considerable effects on the book industry: a reform of basic teaching resulted in greater demand for school textbooks; and the devaluation of the Brazilian currency, the mil-réis (1930-31) resulted in imported books becoming, for the first time, more expensive than those published in Brazil.

Feb 27, 2004 03:26 PM This is really cool, im going to try it out, There are just suggestions you don't have to take them Maybe Brasilia should not be the first city being that it was built in the late 50s- early 60s, Salvador would be better being the first city in Brazil.
Maybe you should make the leader D.Pedro II because Lula really hasen't done anything major (me being Brazilian living in Brazil I know this), and D.Pedro was the last monarch leader of Brazil before the republica velha.
On the other hand, I really like the unique unit, and the scientific and military leaders are quite right, but don't use pele, he was a soccer player, make him anther great author, or president.
