Vasgen Sarkissian (Վազգեն Սարգսյան, Ararat, Armenia March 5, 1959 - October 26, 1999 Yerevan), also known as Vazgen Sarkisyan, was Prime Minister of Armenia for the Republican Party of Armenia from June 1999 until his assassination.
He was elected to the Armenian parliament in the 1990 elections, the first semi-free elections Armenia had held, where he became a member of the Internal Affairs and Defence Committee.
Despite ensuring that President Ter-Petrosyan's side won the disputed 1995 election, and crushing street protests against the manipulated results, Sarkissian abandoned him in late 1997 and switched his support to prime minister Robert Kocharyan, who soon took over as president.

There are 94 political parties registered with the authorities, but only parties with at least 20,000 members may participate in nationwide elections and are thus represented in the National Assembly.
The People’s Party of Armenia (PPA) was also a significant force at one time, but has had difficulty recovering from the death of its leader and founder Karen Demirchian, the former parliament speaker, in the 1999 parliamentary shootings.
