Kwenn's Lexicon - repulsorlift   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Repulsorlifts provided craft with the capacity to fly in atmosphere, a few centimetres from the ground or miles into the air.
Repulsorlifts were a common sight across the galaxy, with most citizens taking the devices for granted.
The effect of a repulsorlift could be controlled, with the user being able to set a 'flight ceiling' for the maximum height the repulsor-equipped object could reach.

Repulsorlift - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A repulsorlift is an anti-gravity technology in the fictional Star Wars universe, capable of levitating any object to which it is applied.
Repulsorlifts are usually assembled in arrays or clusters.
In large ships, the repulsorlift is powered by an antigrav generator.

Star Wars InfoNet: Technology: Repulsorlifts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Repulsorlifts require an intake of air in order to cool themselves down and cannot be operated in an area without this for an extended period of time without significant modification prior to use.
All landspeeders have repulsorlifts that will only lift them about a meter off the ground because (as their name states) they are made for traversing land and do not need to rise any further from the ground than to avoid the most common debris and natural obstacles.
Repulsorlifts are also used to move heavy cargo in and out of ships as well as move people and droids around otherwise inaccessible areas, should their occupation require it.

The Star Wars Databank entry on the subject ( [1] and [2]) seem to flatly contradict large parts of this article.
In particular the claim that the repulsorlift is useless in zero-g environments is inconsistent with the Death Star using them for propulsion.
There were no repulsorlifts on the Death Stars, only sub-light engines and hyperdrives in those areas.

Heavy weapons repulsorlift squads are those which have additional armaments built into their vehicles, most often dismount weapons such as a heavy repeating blaster, a Merr-Sonn 4.4 grenade launcher or even a light laser cannon, which may be dismounted by infantry and used when really heavy firepower is needed.
Repulsorlift HQ has 18 repulsorlifts to move everyone in HQ, one of which is crewed by the major and staff officers, another by the battalion captain and staff officers plus a sergeant driver.
Repulsorlift battalions are most commonly used to gather information on the enemy's movements, cut off enemy retreats, disrupt supply lines, harass enemy movement, and take lightly defended resources away from the main theater of operations.

 Star Wars: Databank | repulsorlift
A repulsorlift is a type of antigravity engine that allows vehicles and vessels to push against gravity fields, providing flight.
Efficient and inexpensive, repulsorlifts provide propulsion to a wide variety of craft -- from the tiny STAP s used by Trade Federation battle droid s, to the immense sail barge employed by Jabba the Hutt.
Repulsorlifts are so efficient that they are rarely ever shut off -- even when powered down, a landspeeder continues to hover off the ground.

Unlike most air traffic on Coruscant, which is restricted to the preprogrammed flight paths of the autonavigation lanes, the air taxis are allowed to travel in "free space," meaning that they are free to travel through the planet's skies along any path the pilot chooses to follow.
The air taxi has a revolutionary repulsorlift system that is not only extremely efficient, but gives the vehicle an amazing flight ceiling and an impressive degree of control in the hands of a trained pilot.
For a pilot to rate a "free space" classification on his operating license, the pilot must be trained to use the vehicle's impressive onboard comm and sensor systems to constantly monitor all surrounding traffic...all while flying the tiny craft at the very edge of its capabilities.

Repulsorlift is the same thing as anti-gravity and works by neutralising Higgs bosons (the sub-atomic particles responsible for giving particles mass).
Using repulsorlift technology there is no problem in suddenly accelerating yourself to near light speed, the real technological breakthrough is in using a stasis field to overcome the massive G-forces you’d otherwise be subject to.
As soon as you re-enter real-space you need to engage the repulsorlift to slow you down and at the same time also re-create a stasis field to protect you from the massive deceleration.

Repulsorlift towed artillery wouldn't suffer from this problem since it sits on the ground once deployed, but repulsor tanks and repulsor artillery will definitely have a poorer rate of fire than vehicles which are stabilized on solid ground, such as the AT-AT.

Repulsorlifts are antigravity devices which make it possible for any machine equipped with them to float above the ground.
Repulsor devices are found on hover vehicles like landspeeders and snowspeeders, spaceships, and on certain expensive droids.
Starships use repulsorlifts to maneuver during landing or takeoff, while hover vehicles rely on them as their only means of getting off the ground.
