Luis De Zuniga Y Requesens - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
REQUESENS - 1576), Spanish governor of the Netherlands, had the misfortune to succeed the duke of Alva and to govern amid hopeless difficulties under the direction of Philip II.
Requesens was only "a gentleman of cloak and sword" (caballero de capa y espada), though by the king's favour he was "grand commander" of the military order of Santiago in Castile.
Requesens came to Brussels on the 17th of November 1573, and till his death on the 5th of March 1576 was plunged into insuperable difficulties.

Requesens, Luis de Zuniga y. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Born into the highest nobility of Spain, he held high governmental and diplomatic posts and was chief adviser to John of Austria, with whom he took part in the battle of Lepanto (1571).
In 1573, Philip II sent Requesens to the Netherlands to replace Alba as governor.
Requesens was beset by financial difficulties, which led his unpaid troops to mutiny, and, after the long and successful siege (1574) of Leiden, he once more made peace overtures to William, who again rejected them.

Requesens could raise no money in the Netherlands; his secretary wrote to Spain, that the exchequer was at its last gasp, and the cabinet of Madrid was at its wits' end, and almost incapable of raising ways and means.
Meantime, Requesens sent Champagny to England, to counteract the effect of this embassy of the estates, and to beg the Queen to give no heed to the prayers of the rebels, to enter into no negotiations with them, and to expel them at once from her kingdom.
Requesens was more than ever straitened for funds, wringing, with increasing difficulty, a slender subsidy, from time to time, out of the reluctant estates of Brabant, Flanders, and the other obedient provinces.

Both tracks are quite steep and quite difficult to ride up, not only because they are steep but also because their surfaces are in rather a bad state.
Once in the hamlet of Requesens (511 m), you can eat at La Cantina, the only restaurant in the area, which is in the old stables of the main farm.
Once you reach Requesens, you come to the end of the track and to the end of the climb.

Apart from this hope, however, there was little encouragement to be derived from anything positively known of the new functionary, or the policy which he was to represent.
Don Luis de Requesens and Cuniga, Grand Commander of Castile and late Governor of Milan, was a man of mediocre abilities, who possessed a reputation for moderation and sagacity which he hardly deserved.
His military prowess had been chiefly displayed in the bloody and barren battle of Lepanto, where his conduct and counsel were supposed to have contributed, in some measure, to the victorious result.

For this reason, the jurisdiction was kept in hands of the Counts-Kings until 1391, when it was sold to the Tarragona Archbishop by Joan I. During the First half of the 14th.century, the Montoliu family had the rights over the village.
Curiously, the census of 1358, points Berenguer de Requesens as owner of the place, meanwhile the one of 1365-70, tells that the sir of the village was Berenguer de Montoliu.
In the 17th.century, Vilallonga was owned by the Dalmases family, one of whose members, Pau Ignasi Dalmases, got the title of Marquis of Vilallonga from the King-archduke Carlos III in 1710.
