Requiem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Requiem or Requiem Mass, also known formally (in Latin) as the Missa pro defunctis or Missa defunctorum, is a liturgical service of the Roman Catholic Church and its Eastern Rite.
"Requiem" is also the title of various musical compositions used in such liturgical services or as concert pieces as settings of the portions of that mass which have been traditionally sung in the Roman Catholic liturgy.
The several Holocaust requiems may be regarded as a specific subset of this type.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Requiem Masses
The ceremonies of the Mass of Requiem are the same as those of the so-called "Mass of the Living" with the exception of a few omissions and variations indicated in Title XIII of the Rubrics.
There are other conditions for the celebration of the Requiem Mass; one is that the rite of the day should allow the celebration; another than the celebrant should not be obliged, by reason of his official position, to celebrate a Mass of the living.
The Decree of the Congregation of Rites of 30 June, 1896, and the reformed Rubric of the Missal (V, 3) are interpreted in that sense.

Requiem (Verdi) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Verdi suggested that all Italian musicians should assemble a Requiem in honor of the master opera composer and conductor and began the effort by submitting the "Libera me." During the next year a Requiem for Rossini was compiled; however, this work was never performed in Verdi's lifetime.
The terrifying (and instantly recognizable) "Dies Irae" that introduces the traditional sequence of the Latin funeral rite is repeated throughout for a sense of unity, which allows Verdi to explore the feelings of loss and sorrow as well as the human desire for forgiveness and mercy found in the intervening movements of the Requiem.
Trumpets surround the stage to produce an inescapable call to Judgement in the "Tuba mirum" (the resulting combination of brass and choral quadruple-fortissimo markings resulting in some of the loudest unamplified music ever written), and the almost oppressive atmosphere of the "Rex tremendae" creates a sense of unworthiness before the King of Tremendous Majesty.

Requiem was inspired by a set of inscriptional capitals in Ludovico Vicentino degli Arrighi's 1523 writing manual, Il Modo de Temperare le Penne.
As part of the adaptation of this design, Requiem was outfitted with an original lowercase, a set of figures, and an italic in the 'chancery' style that Arrighi helped popularize.
The Requiem family includes three sizes of roman, small caps, and italic, as well as a font of italic ligatures, and two fonts of ornaments.

Brahms' German Requiem: History and Criticism
Hanslick in particular praised the Requiem's innovative quality and impressive construction, although he conceded that it was difficult for the listener to grasp, and was probably not destined for widespread popularity.
Perhaps the greatest reevaluation of the Requiem and indeed all of Brahms' oeuvre came with the 1950 publication of Schoenberg's essay "Brahms the Progressive." Here, refuting the Wagnerian image of Brahms as an unfruitful conservative, as "the classicist, the academician," [29] Schoenberg acclaimed Brahms' more progressive musical moments and praised his innovative qualities.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to document the performance history of the Requiem in Europe in the 20th century, not least because of the intervening war years and the lack of adequate recordkeeping materials.

There are requiems (settings of the Roman Catholic mass for the dead) in the classical repertoire by almost every important composer and suited for almost every taste: introspective, mournful, or confident of the promise of the hereafter.
Verdi's Requiem is by far the most theatrical of them all, with big, dramatic arias (requiring big, dramatic voices) and choruses, heroic trumpets, and a deafening bass drum that provokes an inescapably visceral reaction in the bombastic "Dies Irae" section.
A unique element of this Requiem is it's theatrics; his use of varying volumes in rapid succession and a grandiloquent choral score can startle the unprepared music lover.

The Requiem Mass for Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873) was first performed at the Church of San Marco, Milan on 22nd May 1874 (exactly a year to the day after Manzoni's death) with Teresa Stolz (soprano), Maria Waldmann (mezzo-soprano), Giuseppe Capponi (tenor) and Ormondo Maini (bass); Verdi himself conducted.
In the following years Verdi himself took the Requiem on a tour of Europe, generally to great acclaim and handsome box office receipts - indeed, it turned out to be quite a money spinner for Ricordi and the composer.
Composed in 1869 as Verdi's contribution for the composite Messa per Rossini, which was never performed, the 'Libera me', the final movement, provided some of the material for the corresponding movement of the Manzoni Requiem.
