Requiem (Verdi)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Verdi suggested that all Italian musicians should assemble a Requiem in honor of the master opera composer and conductor and began the effort by submitting the "Libera me." Over the next few years a Requiem for Rossini was compiled; however, this work was never performed.
Verdi kept toying with his "Libera me," frustrated that the combined commemoration of Rossini's life would not be performed.
The terrifying (and instantly recognizable) "Dies Irae" that introduces the traditional sequence of the Latin funeral rite is repeated throughout for a sense of unity, which allows Verdi to explore the feelings of loss and sorrow as well as the human desire for forgiveness and mercy found in the intervening movements of the Requiem.

 Metroactive Music | Verdi's Requiem
Verdi's Requiem, for instance, could easily be mistaken for an unstaged opera with too many chorus numbers and a downer plot.
As requiems go, however, Verdi's is uplifting, and San Jose Symphony's presentation of it last week made a moving spectacle--all the more so in light of the concert's dedication to the memory of longtime patron Faith Davies.
Verdi's Requiem can do that; it is a religious work of such individualized utterance that the composer's personal sense of ceremony outshines that of the church's.

 Verdi
Verdi had been a lifelong admirer of his writings and was deeply affected by his death, remarking to a friend, ‘With him dies the purest, holiest and highest of our glories’.
Though the Requiem is Verdi’s only large-scale work not intended for the stage, it is unashamedly theatrical in style, with passages of great tenderness and simplicity contrasting with intensely powerful dramatic sections.
The uncomplicated directness of Verdi’s music, his supreme ability to write wonderful melodies which lie perfectly for the human voice, his brilliant orchestration and above all the inspired dramatic intensity of the Requiem are lasting qualities which have guaranteed its enduring popularity with both choirs and audiences.

Verdi's dramatic music was introduced and interspersed with television clips of survivors, footage from a nazi propaganda film on Terezin, and live narration.
Although it differs strikingly in tone from the original Requiem text, it does mention the resurrection of the dead and it was inserted into the Requiem, where it added a note of pure terror to the basic note of peace and comfort.
Verdi, in particular, who was a strong believer (though an anticlerical) and genuinely afraid of death and punishment, treated it with some of the most dramatic writing of his career.

Trumpets surround the stage to produce an inescapable call to Judgement in the "Tuba mirum" (the resulting combination of brass and choral quadruple-fortissimo markings resulting in some of the loudest unamplified music ever written), and the almost oppressive atmosphere of the "Rex tremendae" creates a sense of unworthiness before the King of Tremendous Majesty.

THE VERDI REQUIEM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
When Verdi was 16 years old, he read Manzoni's famous novel, I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed), and from then on Verdi was in awe of Manzoni's national vision and sense of humanity.
Verdi had announced his retirement then, and he subsequently thought the Requiem would be his last work, little dreaming that his Shakespearean operas, Otello (l887) and Falstaff (l898), would follow much later.
Although the premiere of the Requiem took place in a church, it was not meant to be a church service, but rather a public tribute to Manzoni.

In the following years Verdi himself took the Requiem on a tour of Europe, generally to great acclaim and handsome box office receipts - indeed, it turned out to be quite a money spinner for Ricordi and the composer.
Composed in 1869 as Verdi's contribution for the composite Messa per Rossini, which was never performed, the 'Libera me', the final movement, provided some of the material for the corresponding movement of the Manzoni Requiem.

Lets take for an example the opening "Requiem aeternam" chorus, where the tune (sung by the soprano in the a-capella section that appears in the very last part, written, incidentaly, some 5 years before the Requiem) is played by the violins, yet the chorus utters the words, sottovoce.
