The liturgy of the requiem Mass has inspired glorious music over the centuries, reaching back to composers of sacred music well before Mozart's time and famously including, after him, Berlioz, Brahms, Verdi and Fauré.
The D minor "Requiem," although left incomplete at the time of Mozart's death in 1791, is a great and powerful work.
But the Rolling Requiem may point the way toward a more elevated form of collective remembering, a form better suited to the enormity of the event that requires it.

 Brahms Requiem
Ulrich Dibelius maintains that the "normal" time for composing a Requiem is "after the midlife crisis;" and goes on to give supporting evidence: "Saint-Saens (age 42), Fauré (43), or Dvorak (49), if not even older, as in the case of Cherubini (56), Verdi (61), or Cavalli (ca.
Thus the German Requiem is not a liturgical work but a freely formed, artistic confrontation with the problem of death as must be faced by all mankind.
History of the Work: Probably no other composer in the history of music began thinking about a Requiem as early in life as Brahms.

Dances including Baroque Suite, (1972), Ray Charles Suite, Fauré Requiem (1977), Sacra Conversazione (1985) set to the Mozart Requiem, and Court of Miracles were much-loved standards in the company’s repertoire.
Inspired by childhood experiences with Dorothy Goulding’s Toronto Children’s Players, by the humanist ideals of José Limón, with whom he studied and danced, and by the concentrated poetics of Graham dance, Earle created almost a hundred dances for TDT.
Sunrise, for which Earle received the 1987 Dora Award in New Choreography, marked a departure from the romanticism of earlier work; later works have introduced haunting images of despair, anonymity and loss.

 Ein Deutsches Requiem
Thus, as in the case of the French composer Fauré,Brahms omits the most spectacular element of the Latin mass, theDies Irae, the day of judgment depicted in fire-and-brimstonepassion in the requiems of Verdi, Mozart and Berlioz.
"A German Requiem" is a long (hour-plus)work nearly devoid of rapid tempos and brilliant fortissimos. But the concentrated beauty of the music inspires deep reverencefrom performers and audiences alike.
Most significant, as suggested bythe title of the work itself, is the highly personal vision ofthe religious component of the text—a kind of non-Christianpantheism that Bach would not have imagined, and even Beethovendid not dare employ.

440-90x Dies Gratiae: Requiem Reflections by Craig Phillips and John Thornburg
Written on a commission from Keith Weber and Christ Church, Tyler Texas, this work was designed to be a 'companion' to the Fauré Requiem, using the same orchestration as the Rutter/Hinshaw edition and the same choral forces (SATB with baritone and soprano solos).
John Thornburg's text for the work consists of six meditations or reflections on passages from the Dies Irae section of the Requiem Mass, which, incidentally, is the only section that Fauré did not set.
Imagine the joy of receiving a commission from a trusted colleague and friend to write a series of poems for an extended choral work that would say about life what the Requiem Mass says about death.

 Observer Tallis, Spem in Alium
To mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Tallis, here are his biggest and best church compositions, performed in its customary high style by the Oxford Camerata under Jeremy Summerly (whose Fauré Requiem remains one of Naxos's all-time bestsellers).
Tallis's youthful motet Salve intemerata is among the longest single-movement works of the 16th century, but it is Spem in alium, a work of Tallis's maturity, that overshadows any other English piece of the period, including those of his great contemporary, William Byrd.
Scored for 40 independent voices, it is symphonic in proportion and resplendent in this surround-sound version.
