Rerum Novarum is opposed to state control of the means of production, which would reduce every citizen to being a "cog" in the state machine.
In Rerum Novarum, Leo XIII strongly affirmed the natural character of the right to private property, using various arguments against the socialism of his time.[65] This right, which is fundamental for the autonomy and development of the person, has always been defended by the Church up to our own day.
The encyclical Rerum Novarum can be read as a valid contribution to socio-economic analysis at the end of the nineteenth century, but its specific value derives from the fact that it is a document of the Magisterium and is fully a part of the Church's evangelizing mission, together with many other documents of this nature.

Where Rerum Novarum exhibits a concern that society be organized in such a way that a vibrant network of what we today would call mediating institutions be active in protecting and promoting the welfare of the commonweal, Centesimus Annus explicitly calls for such “intermediate communities” to be left free to extend their positive social impact.
Both Rerum Novarum and Centesimus Annus are worthy of celebration by those who believe that individual liberty offers the best hope for the common good; and they are worthy of study by religious collectivists who mistakenly believe that religion in general, and Christianity in particular, ought to opt for socialism.

Rerum Novarum was his effort -- ultimately unsuccessful -- to reverse the trend.
The two issues he faced explicitly are the Marxist rejection of private property (which he incorrectly presented as total; Marx sought only to abolish bourgeois property based "on the exploitation of the many by the few") and its theory of class struggle.

Comparing the social encyclicals by popes in the first century after the publication of Rerum Novarum, one can notice an evolution not only in their attitude toward the real political-economic situation but also in their postulated social solutions.
It seems that an analysis of the contents of the encyclicals gives one the right to propose the statement that the general view of political-economic life is rather similar and quite comparable to the model of democratic capitalism in the first encyclicals.
In Rerum Novarum (1891) and Quadragesimo Anno (1931), the two cornerstones of modern Catholic social teaching, the language is crisp in a way that is largely absent in the later encyclicals.

Rerum Novarum was a watershed in the life of the modern Church because it situated the Church in the social, political and economic ferment of the late nineteenth century and it began a tradition of engagement with the social order which slowly took shape over the next century.
Rerum Novarum opened the Church up to consideration of the socio-economic, political and cultural forces that were shaping and continue to shape the modern world.
In general, the encyclicals have taken issue with many facets of the contemporary world which are deemed to violate the essential dignity of the human person and trample upon justice and the common good of the global community.

 ON THE 105TH ANNIVERSARY OF RERUM NOVARUM
My first encyclical was Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum or The Condition of Labor (an encyclical is a letter from the Pope to the Bishops etc.) This letter was written about 105 years ago but is still quite valid today.
Pope John Paul II’s letter celebrating the “Hundredth Anniversary of Rerum Novarum” states that certain objectives of Rerum Novarum still remain valid and in some cases are goals yet to be met (no. 34).
What Leo did in Rerum Novarum was to place the church very firmly in the center of the moral issues involved, especially about workers.

Though argumentation fallacies are a subject that has been covered many times at Rerum Novarum (and will continue to be) it is not often that one finds themselves defining argumentation fallacies that have rarely been explicitly explained before.
Strangely enough, Rerum Novarum is fast approaching its 1800th posting and the subject about to be touched on here has never been discussed in the manner it is about to be.
Those who follow Rerum Novarum are aware of a couple of these viewpoints to which I refer so I will not belabour this brief weblog entry with examples.

Pope John Paul II has marked the hundredth anniversary of the 1891 publication of Leo XIII's first Encyclical on the Christian organisation of society, 'Rerum Novarum' ('Of new things'), with his new Encyclical, 'Centesimus Annus' ('The hundredth year').
The dangers which the Pope foresees are of a possible revival of totalitarian controls, the domination of new societies by consumerist practices, and the rise of religious fundamentalism, which is perhaps natural granted the apocalyptic nature of the age.
As for remedies, the Pope went back to apply the principles of Rerum Novarum to a completely new and highly technological age.
