In rare cases the general public may intercede for ships from the reserve fleet that are about to be scrapped; usually asking for the Navy to donate them for use as museums or memorials.
The groups of the Pacific Reserve Fleet were at Alameda, Bremerton, Columbia River, Long Beach, Mare Island, San Diego, San Francisco, Stockton, and Tacoma.
As of 2004, the administrative organization is known as the Navy Inactive Fleet, and is headquartered at Portsmouth, Virginia.

This is a "nest" composed mostly of fleet oilers.

 Gulfport Aids in Mobilization of Reserve Fleet Hospital
is in the process of mobilizing 400 personnel from across 48 states for Reserve Fleet Hospital (FH) Dallas to replace FH Portsmouth, Va., as the Navy's expeditionary medical facility on the ground in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
This is the first Navy reserve fleet hospital since Operation Desert Storm in 1991 to receive operational orders into a combat area.
The reserve fleet hospital, under the command of Capt. Jack E. Riggs, will be relieving the Portsmouth unit currently located in Kuwait in January.
