| | Dragonflies & Damselflies: Identifying and Spotting Resident Northants Species www.northantsdragonflies.org.uk (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06) |
 | | Northamptonshire has a wealth of waterways, based around the rivers Nene, Cherwell, Welland and Great Ouse, and an exceptional array of gravel pits that play host to dragonflies that favour neutral-alkaline waterbodies and slow-flowing rivers--these tend to be rich in vegetation and hence insect life. |
 | | Species such as the Common Hawker, Black Darter, Keeled Skimmer and Small Red Damselfly are not known in Northamptonshire, in common with much of East Anglia, as they favour acid waters and bogs. |
 | | To see all species listed for each site requires observation throughout the flight season (end of April to end of October), however visits at the end of June and end of August should show most of the spring-summer species (Damselflies, Emperors, Chasers and Skimmers) and the summer-autumn species (Hawkers and Darters) respectively. |
