Migration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The species that periodically migrate are called migratory, those that do not are called resident (or sedentary).
The longest known migration of a bird is that of the Arctic Tern, which migrates from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back each year.
Flyways are routes that certain bird species take to migrate.

AVIAN DISTRIBUTION IN DOMINICAN SHADE COFFEE PLANTATIONS: AREA AND HABITAT RELATIONSHIPS
Examination of species accumulation curves indicated that species com- position (i.e., richness) of the plantations was adequately determined and recent re-surveys of 32 of these plantations have found a similar species composition (Wunderle and Latta 1996).
Resident species differed from migrants in their responses to elevation (five resident species vs. one migrant species significantly correlated) and plantation area (four vs. zero).
Residents and wintering Nearctic migrants were sampled by point counts in 40 small to medium-sized (0.07-8.65 ha) shade coffee plantations with an overstory of Inga vera in the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic.

Rainforest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In addition to prodigious rainfall, many rainforests are characterized by a high number of resident species and tremendous biodiversity of their flora and fauna.
It has been estimated that many hundreds of millions of new species of plants, insects, and microorganisms are still undiscovered and as yet unnamed by science.
Biologists have estimated that large numbers of species are being driven to extinction, possibly more than 50,000 a year, due to the removal of habitat with destruction of the rain forests.

Resident Fish   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Species and Species Group Implementation Sub-programs--Resident Fish Species: The goal of this sub-program is to maintain and restore the distribution and abundance of resident native and non-native fish species in order to support a sport fishery and healthy forage base.
Predation by the species of the Lower Large Tributary Community was also hypothesized to be the mechanism restricting the downstream range of the species of the Foothill Community, which are often fairly common in downstream areas of the Sacramento River and its tributary systems.
A single summertime sample may be sufficient to characterize the status of summer resident fish communities but would miss seasonally important species and seasonal changes in resident species populations that may be important in understanding the ecological processes that determine the final structure of the resident fish community and its response to management actions.

 Appendix B - Resident Fish
Resident fish are those that are not obligated to migrate to the ocean to complete their life cycle.
Resident fish stocks provide significant recreation opportunities in the lower Snake River, and certain species are important in predator-prey dynamics affecting anadromous salmonid survival.
Species such as chiselmouth, carp, northern pikeminnow, suckers, and smallmouth bass were widely distributed among reservoirs and habitats, and abundance of these species was reported as common in most locations.

For example, in those systems where particular species are considered to be economically or aesthetically important, it might be more appropriate to utilize resident species for testing (3).
This guide is designed to guide the selection of resident species for use as test organisms in aquatic and sediment toxicity tests.
1.3 The procedures for selecting resident species in toxicity testing are necessarily general at this time because information is often lacking for specific taxa or groups of taxa.

Wildlife in Danger of Extinction: Central Florida
Species that are restricted to specific habitats that are being rapidly lost to development are often classified as a species of special concern.
Species that are common in Florida, but threatened or endangered in adjacent states may be classified as a species of special concern.
It is used for those species whose range in Florida is limited or peripheral and those species that are widespread in the state but whose populations maintain low densities, see Figure 1.

Invading species have tough time cracking diverse neighborhood
Working with prairie plants, the research team found that a rich assemblage of species repels invaders because it is more likely to contain plants occupying a niche similar to what the invader needs, as well as plants that make good all-around competitors.
Plants tend to inhibit the establishment of species from the same guild because those are the species with similar growth characteristics and resource needs, said Fargione.
But guilds are broad categories, and increasing the number of resident species in each guild provides additional resistance to invaders by strengthening the likelihood that some residents will closely resemble the invaders.

Field Trip Earth: Elephants as Keystone Species
Within a habitat, each species connects to and depends on other species, and each species contributes to the overall integrity of the habitat.
The keystone's disappearance triggers the loss of other resident species, and the intricate connections among the remaining residents begin to unravel.
In fact, studies show that 30 percent of the larger tree species (and 40 percent of the tallest tree species) in these forests depend on elephants for seed dispersal.

As the species prefers habitat with short grass any area with this type of habitat on the North Shore may have some birds, however, due to the birds small size and their elusiveness birds may not be seen despite being present.
Best time to observe this species is November to August, although earlier in the season birds are more predictable, as they are still sitting on eggs, later when the chicks hatch it can be up to two weeks between visits by the parents.
The best way to view the species however, as these other areas are near impossible to reach, is to watch them as they fly over the coast in the evenings on their way inland.

With respect to endangered and threatened species, the terms mean to use, and the use of, methods and procedures to bring any endangered or threatened species to the point at which the measures provided for the species are no longer necessary.
  (d)   "Endangered species" means any species or higher taxon of plant whose continued existence as a viable component of the State's flora is determined to be in jeopardy by the Board; also, any species of plant determined to be an "endangered species" pursuant to the Endangered Species Act.
  (l)   "Threatened species" means any resident species of plant which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range, or one that is designated as threatened by the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service.

Dragonflies & Damselflies: Identifying and Spotting Resident Northants Species www.northantsdragonflies.org.uk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Northamptonshire has a wealth of waterways, based around the rivers Nene, Cherwell, Welland and Great Ouse, and an exceptional array of gravel pits that play host to dragonflies that favour neutral-alkaline waterbodies and slow-flowing rivers--these tend to be rich in vegetation and hence insect life.
Species such as the Common Hawker, Black Darter, Keeled Skimmer and Small Red Damselfly are not known in Northamptonshire, in common with much of East Anglia, as they favour acid waters and bogs.
To see all species listed for each site requires observation throughout the flight season (end of April to end of October), however visits at the end of June and end of August should show most of the spring-summer species (Damselflies, Emperors, Chasers and Skimmers) and the summer-autumn species (Hawkers and Darters) respectively.
