The Parliament of the United Kingdom is divided into the House of Commons and the House of Lords; though it is often assumed that an MP is a member of Commons, they can be a member of either or both houses.
MPs in the House of Commons are elected in general elections and by-elections to represent constituencies by the first-past-the-post system of election, and remain MPs until Parliament is dissolved (parliaments can last up to five years).

Members of Parliament sitting in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom are technically forbidden to resign.
When more than two MPs resign at a time, as for example happened when 15 Ulster unionist MPs resigned in protest at the Anglo-Irish Agreement on December 17, 1985, the resignations are in theory not simultaneous but instead spread throughout the day, with each member holding one of the offices for a short time.
The Manor of Northstead was first used as a pretext for resignation on April 6, 1842, by Patrick Chalmers, Member for Montrose District of Burghs.

In Canada, the term Member of Parliament refers specifically to a member of the Canadian House of Commons.
House of Commons and the House of Lords; though it is often assumed that an MP is a member of Commons, they can be a member of either or both houses.
The representatives from the Dewan Rakyat are elected in the general elections, or by- elections, as opposed to the members of the Dewan Negara who are appointed by the King, in recognition to outstanding service to the country in various fields.The various State Governments also have the power to appoint Senators,propotionate to the state's size.

Members of the House of Lords may not serve in the House of Commons, or even vote in parliamentary elections; however, they are permitted to sit in the chamber during debates.
The Speaker is Chairman of the House of Commons Commission, which oversees the running of the House, and controls debates by calling on Members to speak.
Perhaps the most famous disruption of the House of Commons was caused by King Charles I, who entered the Commons Chamber in 1642 with an armed force in order to arrest five Members of Parliament—who belonged to an anti-royalist faction—for high treason.

Elizabeth's death in 1603 brought about the end to the rule of the House of Tudor; she was succeeded by the Scottish monarch James VI, who ruled in England as James I. Although England and Scotland were in personal union under one monarch, they remained separate kingdoms.
It is the prerogative of the monarch to summon, prorogue, and dissolve Parliament.

It is conventional to consider the House as the "lower house", and the Senate as the "upper house", although the U.S. Constitution, while making the functions of the two houses different in various ways, does not use such language.
Under article one, section two of the constitution, seats in the House of Representatives are apportioned among the states on the basis of population, as determined by a census conducted every ten years.
Like the Senate, the House of Representatives meets in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. At one end of the chamber of the House is a rostrum from which the Speaker presides.
