The resistance movement developed to provide the Allies with intelligence, attack the Germans when possible and to assist the escape of Allied airmen.
There were resistance movements that took direct orders from the Special Operations Executive, there was the communist resistance, groups loyal to de Gaulle, regional resistance movements that wanted independence etc. In the north, the target was simply the Germans while in the south, the Vichy government was a target as well as the Germans.
The first resistance movements were in the north, such as the OCM (Organisation Civile et Militaire) and by the end of 1940, six underground newspapers were being regularly printed in the north.

In the eyes of most Arabs, Hizbullah remains the symbol of resistance movements in the region, since this is the only movement which managed to expel Israel from occupied Arab territory.
The movement, observers say, is hard-pressed to find a workable strategy to deal with changing regional realities, particularly in light of hostile rhetoric coming from Washington on how Hizbullah should be reined in.
As the movement grew, its political wing became involved in civil and parliamentary society, while resistance against the Israeli occupation of the South continued to constitute its landmark.

Australian Draft Resistance and the Vietnam War - statements by Michael Matteson and Geoff Mullen on Conscription
Much has been written about the Vietnam anti-war movement in Australia, but there has been little acknowledgement of the role of individual anarchists or anarchist groups.(1) Anarchists were active at all levels of the anti-war movement.
Draft Resistance never posed a threat to the number of conscripts required, but the campaigns did have an increasingly political effect on the Government of the day, and was a factor in the election of the Whitlam Labor Party to power in December 1972, the first federal labor government in 23 years.
Pacifism within the movement is usually linked to a form of marxian socialism, a form of participatory democracy that doesn't go as far as abolition of the state, or a form of anarchism combining anarcho-syndicalism and Paul Goodman-type community anarchism.

After the compromise at Najaf – what future for the Iraqi resistance movement?
The recent escalation of the armed conflict between resistance fighters in Iraq and the occupying forces that started at the beginning of August and the scale of the violence highlights the enormous difficulties that US imperialism is facing in its attempt to “pacify” and establish some form of rule over the country.
The tragedy of the situation is that the Iraqi labour movement – due to the limitations mainly of the leadership of the two largest Communist Parties, the Communist Party of Iraq and the Communist Workers’ Party of Iraq – is not leading the resistance movement.
The problem for the Americans was that the movement in Najaf was not – and is not – controlled solely by one man. Al-Sadr both leads and is led at the same time.
