Resolute (Inuktitut:Qausuittuq, sometimes Resolute Bay) is a small Inuit hamlet on Cornwallis Island in Nunavut, Canada.
It is situated along the shore of Resolute Bay and the Northwest Passage and is part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region.
Resolute is one of Canada's northernmost communities and is second only to Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island (Alert and Eureka are more northerly but are not considered towns - just military outposts and weather stations).

Nunavut officially came into being on April 1, 1999, and was the culmination of more than 30 years of negotiations with the Government of Canada to develop a comprehensive land claim for the Inuit who live there.
Nunavut is only two-and-a-half years old, and although we have made significant progress in establishing the territory, much remains to be done.
Nunavut is looking for partnerships and opportunities where we can establish and develop long-term relationships, not only within our own country, but also within the circumpolar world and the global community.

Resolute Bay was named after the ship HMS Resolute commanded by Captain Henry Kellett carrying out a search expedition for the famous Sir John Franklin expedition of 1845.
The HMS Resolute was stuck in ice and abandoned in 1854 along with three other vessels including the HMS Assistance mentioned above.
Resolute Bay is located in the High Arctic of Canada at approximately 74.9deg North on Cornwallis Island which is located along the Northwest Passage.

When the Resolute was finally retired in 1880, Queen Victoria had a desk made from its timbers and presented it to the American President.

the weather at Resolute, 35 miles northeast of the occurrence location, was reported as follows: winds 260 degrees true at four knots, visibility 10 statute miles, a broken cloud layer at 900 feet, temperature minus 15 degrees Celsius, dewpoint minus 18 degrees Celsius, and altimeter setting 29.77 inches of mercury.
The final contact between the occurrence pilot and the base camp was an advisory from the pilot via high-frequency radio that he was planning to return to Resolute, with possible stops en route if another bear was sighted.

A storage tank farm and various communication towers cluster between Resolute Bay and Resolute Lake.
The brighter patches are due to a coarser ice surface, which may be due to a variety of reasons - multi-year ice, freezing/melting of the surface ice and snow, wind effects on the snow, etc. Waves, of course, wouldn't be evident with an ice cover.
