Respect for the dead is among the activities that makes us most human; and implies respect for the human worth, value, and dignity of other human beings".
My comment: Halloween, the day to honor the dead, is coming up, and I have long protested against the sacrilegious way it is celebrated here.

I honestly have no idea why we should respect the dead; certainly, as you point out, I see respecting the feelings of the relatives/friends of the person who died, but that's respecting the living, not the person who has shuffled off his or her mortal coil.
We don't often think of "one-mind", and in the case of "death" and respecting the dead, that is certainly the case.
For myself, I respect the dead in that everybody's human, and everybody dies eventually.

As far as seeing pictures of dead people in the newspaper, I saw the body of Rehnquist on the news day before yesterday and the body of Pope John Paul II was pretty prominently displayed when he died a few months ago.
