| | Historical Overview of the Talmud and Responsum [Responsa] |
 | | Although not always used heavily due to the constant change in the lives of Jews (as they moved from one place to the next throughout their history), the responsum (hence, the rulings and advice of rabbis) has been a powerful means to resolve a problem for Jews all over the world. |
 | | However, the effectiveness of responsa, and the rulings and advice of rabbis for that matter, will depend on the Jews' willingness to heed the words of the rabbis and Judaism. |
 | | Indeed, many of the newer sects of Judaism (e.g., Conservative, Reform) are writing their own responsa to the problems that face the Jewish community (e.g., Freehof 1963, 1969, 1977), and literally hundreds of thousands of responsa have occurred this century (Simon, 1994). |
