  Response Time
Traditionally, response time is often defined as the interval from when a user initiates a request to the instant at which the first part of the response is received at by the application.
Response time measuring points must be carefully considered because in client server applications, as well as web systems, the first characters returned to the application often does not contribute to the rendering of the screen with the anticipated response, and do not represent the users impression of response time.
For response time requirements that are stated in terms of what the user sees on the screen, WinRunner should be used, unless there is a reliable mathematical calculation to translate communications based response time into screen based response time.

Response time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a data system, the system response time is the interval between the receipt of the end of transmission of an inquiry message and the beginning of the transmission of a response message to the station originating the inquiry.
Response Time is an attribute that applies to LCD monitors.
It should be noted that the response time given by the LCD manufacturer is often the fastest measured, and not the average or maximum response time (which may be significantly longer).

IBM: The Economic Value of Rapid Response Time
Research on rapid response time now indicates that this earlier theory is not borne out by the facts: productivity increases in more than direct proportion to a decrease in response time.
With 390 users, the computer response time had deteriorated to an average of 4 seconds and the time to complete an average task had increased 50%, from 32 minutes to 48 minutes (Figure 5).
This change brought system response time for the project team down from the 2.3 seconds that was common throughout the facility to 0.84 seconds.

UAF Computing and Communications - Response Time
Response times in the chart represent the time between when this record or ticket is made and when a trained technician should make contact, or start working on the problem.
Response time does not represent the time to solve a problem, it only represents the time between the initial call and response of DCC's Technical Services.
Response time does not mean that the technician will necessarily go to where the complaint is made.

This response is the response of a linear system to a unit step.
One widely used measure of speed of response is the 10%-90% rise time, or the ten-to-ninety rise time.
Settling time can be a good way to measure response time as long as care is taken to ensure that the response stays within 10% (or 5%?) of the final, steady-state value.

 Response Time Overview
Normally, response times should be as fast as possible, but it is also possible for the computer to react so fast that the user cannot keep up with the feedback.
Therefore, the response time guidelines for web-based applications are the same as for all other applications.
For example, this is the limit from the time the user selects a column in a table until that column should highlight or otherwise give feedback that it's selected.

Pressure Transmitter Response Time Test Methods
In practice, however, the response time of a pressure transmitter is usually defined as the time delay between the response of the reference transmitter and the test transmitter as they pass through a setpoint.
In the time domain analysis, the raw noise data is used in a Univariate Autoregressive (UAR) model to obtain the impulse response and then the step response from which the transmitter response time is calculated.
This response time corresponds to the response time that would be obtained for the transmitter using the conventional step or ramp test.

 Response-time Essay
One of the challenges in analysis of response time is the fact that some of the inputs require the desktop computer to do very little, and consequently are very quick, while other inputs send the computer off into a large and complex process which may take seconds or even minutes.
Another serious issue to consider is the variation in response time caused by the configuration of the individual workstation or terminal.
The graphs displayed here show average response times, in each instance, the average of all the incidents that occurred over a period of 15 minutes is displayed in each bar of the graph.

Information Security Glossary - Response / Response Time
Response time usually refers to a user's subjective assessment of a computers 'response' to their request.
The response time of a system results from the interaction of multiple components and not simple the 'power' of the computer itself (although this helps!) There could be massive contention across the network, or there could be heavy processing taking place on resulting in little available 'CPU' time to deal with your request.
One way of improving response time, is to increase the priority of the process which you are running.

If, however, response times are longer than desired, the DBA will then want to know what types of user activities are responsible for making the database work so hard.

X-bit labs - Articles - Closer Look at 15” LCD Monitors Features: Pixel Response Time
It is the time interval between the change of the signal in a particular cell and the change of the state of this cell.
In fact the problem of measuring response time looks simple at first sight: you could measure the time between the dispatch of the signal for cell state change and the actual change, tracking the pixel glow with the help of a photodiode.
After some brainstorming we chose another way of measuring pixel response time: we only need to draw the graph of pixel luminosity with a photodiode and oscilloscope and measure the time between the beginning and end of a luminosity change.

What is response time? - a definition from Whatis.com
The elapsed time between the end of an inquiry or demand on a computer system and the beginning of a response; for example, the length of the time between an indication of the end of an inquiry and the display of the first character of the response at a user terminal.
There is also the concept of perceived response time, which is the time a user senses as the beginning of input and the end of the response.
It is actually possible (though not usual) for perceived response time to be too fast (it can be mildly disconcerting if a system responds almost instantly).
