The Improved RESTIGOUCHE class was a follow-on to the original ST. LAURENT class, and originally carried a dual 3"/50 gun in the position where the ASROC launcher now is.
The twin 3"/70 Vickers mount, which was fitted to the RESTIGOUCHE and MACKENZIE classes, was taller than the 3"/50 and required the bridge windows to be higher to see over the gun.
In the late 1960's, four of the RESTIGOUCHE ships were refitted to carry ASROC, and the new lattice mast was a part of this refit.Also visible are the two SATCOM antennas, and GATINEAU's call sign which is painted on the bulkhead in the left of the picture.

Ice out on the Restigouche occurs in mid to late April and unless the river is in full flood, it's possible to catch kelts (or fl salmon) as soon as the ice clears.
During my trip to the Restigouche, which took place in late May I caught both kelts and bright salmon, fish that had arrived in the river so recently that they were shiny as a new silver dollar and still had sea lice clinging to their flanks.

Health Minister Mike Murphy says the province will do all it can to resolve the bed shortage at the only facility in New Brunswick where court-ordered psychiatric assessments are administered, after a judge expressed outrage at the on-going situation Tuesday.
