The wide mouth of the Restigouche River is formed at the western-most (upper) end of the bay.
As it is a salt water body of water, the smell of salt water is quite prominent where it meets other shallow bodies of water, notably the Restigouche River.
The bay is host to an unusual visual phenomenon, the Phantom Ship of the Bay of Chaleur, an apparition of sorts resembling a ship on fire which appears all over the Bay.

Ice out on the Restigouche occurs in mid to late April and unless the river is in full flood, it's possible to catch kelts (or fl salmon) as soon as the ice clears.

The implementation and co-ordination of the management plan for the Upper Restigouche River, which was formally declared a Canadian Heritage River in 1998, continued under the direction of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources in co-operation with a variety of stakeholders.
A stakeholder committee, called the Restigouche River Watershed Management Council, provides a unified voice for Salmon clubs; camp owners; persons interested in the management of salmon; groups providing/protecting recreation/fishing; First Nations; and the NB Conservation Council.

ASF and its partners are conducting this intensive collaborative research to help determine why Atlantic salmon from the Restigouche and other North American rivers are failing to return to their natal rivers to spawn in the abundant numbers of bygone years.
ASF’s research will measure how successful Restigouche River salmon are at negotiating their departure from both the fresh water and estuarine zones.
Research, using the same technology, was conducted on the Miramichi River in 2003 and the ASF researchers will be working on that river again this summer to obtain data to compare to last year’s findings and to identify causes of smolt loss in the estuary.

 Estuaries in the Upper Bay of Chaleur
There are several small rivers that flow into it from the Quebec side that form small estuaries of their own, and that contribute to the overall richness of the ecosystem.
In June of 2000, The Restigouche Estuary was designated an Important Bird Area of International Significance (the first in New Brunswick) because it is the largest staging area in eastern North America for Black scoter.
With the strong outflow from the river, up-swellings of tidal and river currents, and the configuration of the rocky ledges, the estuary teems with the nutrients necessary for an abundant supply of clams, mussels, shrimp, rock crabs and small fish.
