The album became an underground hit, and when Xzibit released his follow-up, 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz (1998), he was heralded as one of the West Coast's most promising talents.
Xzibit's mainstream breakthrough came when he joined Snoop Dogg for the Dre-produced coast-to-coast hit "Bitch Please." Next, he appeared on the posse song "Some L.A. Niggaz" from Dre's 2001 (1999) album, yet another high-profile appearance.
That winter, Loud released Xzibit's biggest-budget album yet, the Dre-executive-produced Restless (2000), which boasted the single "X." The song became the rapper's biggest hit yet, but it didn't scale the charts or break him into heavy rotation at either urban radio or MTV.

While Restless is not the crowning achievement many predicted, it is X to the Z's most-consistent effort to date.
For all his flexibility, Xzibit's Restless is more skewed to the cars and clubs than the basement, due in no small part to Dr. Dre's influence as the album's executive producer.
Restless rolls in the same kind of fluid funk that Dre's brought to both his and Eminem's recent albums -- fat electric bass lines and synthesized symphonics.

Restless | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
Executive producer Dre only worked on three tracks, but Restless bears his fingerprints throughout, trading in the gloomy, gothic sound of Xzibit's superb first two albums for heaps of state-of-the-art second-generation G-funk courtesy of producers such as DJ Quik, Battlecat, and Soopafly.
Where Xzibit once rapped about navigating the streets from the perspective of someone just barely able to survive through legal means, here he teams with Eminem to rap convincingly about the perils of fame.
Restless isn't quite the metatextual running commentary on fame and persecution that The Marshall Mathers LP is, but, like Eminem, Xzibit has gone from addressing the dire circumstances that created him to focusing squarely on life as a rap star.

Xzibit : Restless - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Dre and his Aftermath regime attached very lofty expectations to Restless; X was publicly anointed as the next MC expected to blow up.
Thanks largely to Dre's knob-twisting input, Restless became aural kin to Dre's own 2001 comeback vehicle, as the head-nod factor is immediately established on "Front to Back," the heavenly synth stabs "X," and "Get Your Walk On." The main flaw in Restless' formula lies primarily with Xzibit's extensive list of guest collaborators.
And while Restless isn't the crowning achievement many predicted, it is X to the Z's most consistent effort to date.

Xzibit comes on the more emotional tip, dedicating "Sorry I'm Away So Much" to his son and other family members who he apologizes to for not always fulfilling his duties to them.
Besides, Xzibit has always had the potential to appeal to the masses, the only thing that truly kept him from blowing up before was lack of marketing.

Xzibit is one of the most respected rappers in the West Coast underground.
The Detroit-born/L.A.-based MC created a nice buzz with his 1996 debut, AT THE SPEED OF LIFE, which displayed Xzibit's fierce, technically dazzling flow, and a creative emphasis on skills rather than on gangsta bombast and commercial aspirations.
A string of lauded guest appearances and a collaboration with Dr. Dre in 2000 moved Xzibit into the mainstream, but it was the success of his highly-entertaining MTV car-detailing show, PIMP MY RIDE, which premiered in 2004, that ultimately made Xzibit a household name.
