A few inorganic pesticides are used in urban pest situations as alternatives to organic pesticides because of their relatively low risk to humans and animals.
Synthetic organic pesticides do not naturally occur in the environment, but are synthesized by man. They are called organic compounds because they contain carbon and hydrogen atoms as the basis of their molecular structure.
Biological pesticides that are sometimes used or potentially could be used around schools include microbial pesticides, insect growth regulators, pheromones and select botanicals, such as pyrethrum and corn gluten.

Pesticide application methods and practices are largely dependent upon the nature of the application environment, that is, whether the application is occurring indoors or outdoors.
Pesticide application ranges from household products, such as cockroach sprays and insect repellents (which can be applied without training as long as the label requirements are followed) to restricted use pesticides (which can only be applied by certified individuals).
Restricted use pesticides are those that when applied, may cause adverse effects on the environment, including injury to the applicator.
