Retalhuleu is washed by a great number of rivers, harbors the "Capital of the World", so called by the residents of its principality, and is graced by green vegetation and a warm climate.
During the Republican period, the Department of Retalhuleu was created by the Decree of the 16th of October 1877, taking into account the growth of trade and agriculture in the region, especially the cultivation of coffee.
The Department of Retalhuleu is situated between the foot of the imposing Volcanic Chain and the Ocean, and is of such fortune that its highest lands scarcely reach 900 meters of altitude.

It is the departmental seat of Retalhuleu department as well as the municipal seat of Retalhuleu municipality.

On 8 October 2003, clearance operations in the departments of Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu and Totonicapán officially concluded with a ceremony attended by members of the National Congress, the OAS AICMA Coordinator, diplomatic representatives and media.
Clearance operations in San Marcos department were completed on 15 December 2002 and the official end of operations was announced on 9 May 2003 in a public ceremony.

He works as an advisor to two rural workers unions, one in Retalhuleu Department, the other in San Marcos Department, in Guatemala's northwestern highlands.
Peasants in the latter department recently occupied contested lands on the San Luís estate, in the municipality of Malacatán, and Luís Chávez blames the death threats on local ranchers, who wish to gain control of these and other lands.
Gilmar Vallejos Velásquez, who works with the same land organization Chávez advises in the Department of Retalhuleu, and Eleodoro Chums, a farm workers' leader on the San Luís estate, San Marcos, also believe the threats against them have come from local ranchers.

In Huehuetenango department, teachers demonstrated in the departmental capital while campesinos, unionists and teachers blocked the highway at Puente Naranjales, in Colotenango municipality, and occupied the customs office at the Mexican border in La Mesilla.
In a statement issued on March 3, the MISCP charged that the repression of the CAFTA protests “is reminiscent of the darkest years of the country’s recent history,” a reference to the counterinsurgency of the 1980s.

Seven people were killed in a dispute that started on January 21 between local campesinos and the owner of the El Corozo ranch in Samayac municipality, in the southwestern Guatemalan department of Suchitepéquez.
His body was found on January 22 in San Andrés Villa Seca in nearby Retalhuleu department, with several bullet wounds, although the body wasn’t positively identified by relatives until January 28.
The El Corozo incident reminded many observers of a confrontation at the Nueva Linda ranch in Retalhuleu department on August 31 in which at least 12 people died.

Several sources from the Guatemalan government revealed that new evictions will take place in the next days, which would worsen poverty and violence in said country even more.
The tract known as Nueva Linda, which is 230 kilometers from the country’s capital in Champérico Retalhuleu department near the Mexican border, had been occupied by peasants since September 5th of 2003, in order to demand the clarification of the kidnapping of peasant leader Héctor René Reyes.
It it estimated that more than 1,500 peasant families were occupying the lands which are the property of a Spanish citizen living in Guatemala.

Station director Javier Solís indicated to CERIGUA that the measure is an attempt to eliminate this particular radio station, since although Stereo Samalá is not formally registered, hundreds of other stations also operate in the same manner and were not closed.
Stereo Samalá has always fought to defend and promote human rights, and cooperated with the fire-department, the Retalhuleu departmental government, municipal governments, the National Civilian Police (Policía Nacional Civil), health authorities and other bodies, but above all, with the populace of Retalhuleu department, said Solís.
During CERIGUA's public consultation on the radio station's closure, the public made its opposition to the measure clear, saying that the station had served Retalhuleu's inhabitants well and that the authorities should reverse their decision.

The project has also undertaken region survey around Ujuxte to determine the nature of the region system associated with the site.
