Rete testis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rete testis is an anastomosing network of delicate tubules located in the hilum of the testicle (mediastinum testis) that carries sperm from the seminiferous tubules to the vasa efferentia.
Rete tubular ectasia is a disorder of the rete testis in which many benign cysts are present.
In the area of the rete testis, the sperm are concentrated as fluid and is reabsorbed.

The tumor involves the rete and infiltrates the adjacent testicular parenchyma as a mass consisting predominantly of tubules and cords.
Histologic criteria for the diagnosis of rete carcinoma include: a tumor involving and centered around the rete, transitions from normal rete epithelium to tumor epithelium, transitions from the tumor in the rete to the solid areas, and absence of a germ cell tumor.

 The Male Reproduction System
The testis, slide #94, (examine both odd and even-numbered slides), is covered with a capsule of dense fibro-elastic connective tissue, tunica albuginea, which may be seen on one side of the testis fragment in your slide.
The surface of the testis not covered with mesothelium is the region of the mediastinum testis where the seminiferous tubules converge to become excretory ducts and where blood vessels and nerves enter the gland.
A large fraction of the fluid leaving the testis with spermatozoa is reabsorbed by the epithelia of the ductuli efferentes and the upper portion of the epididymis.

 94 Ductuli Efferentes review
The ductules are encased in connective tissue and fat and begin at the rete testis that is encapsulated in the tunica albuginea of the testis.
The delineation between rete testis and the efferent duct is abrupt, evidenced by the epithelium changing from low cuboidal to columnar in a sharp transition and a marked increase in peritubular capillaries (Amann et al., 1977; Robaire and Hermo, 1988).
Evidence for this is the disappearance of certain bands of proteins from the rete testis fluid between the ductuli efferentes and the initial segment of the epididymis owing to their absorption in the ductuli and/or the initial segment (Jones, 1987; Koskimies and Kormano, 1975; Olson and Hinton, 1985).

The small testis (Smt) mutant mouse is characterized by a small testis of one third to one half the size of a normal testis, and its spermatogenesis is mostly arrested at early stages of meiosis, although a small number of spermatocytes at the late prophase of meiosis and a few spermatids can sometimes be seen.

We found Leydig cell hyperplasia, microlithiasis, angiopathy, adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis, SC nodules, SC dysgenesis and involution, SC-only tubules, tubular atrophy, adluminal compartment lesions, hypospermatogenesis associated with spermatocyte sloughing, spermatogonial maturation arrest, and hypertrophic and multinucleated spermatogonia.
