Topic: Retractable bridge

In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

How draw bridge is made - Background, History, Raw materials, Design, The manufacturing process of draw bridge, ...
Retractable bridges are made so the movable span slides back underneath an adjacent section of the bridge.
Swing bridges are supported on vertical pivots, and the movable span rotates horizontally to open the bridge.
For instance, the Baltic Millennium Bridge in Gateshead, England (to be opened to the public in 2001), consists of two parabolic arches connected by a series of parallel cables.

Extensible-retractable pool and billiard cue bridgestick - Patent 4907799   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The bridge is rectangular in planform, no higher than the depth of two cue notches and no wider than the depth of one notch plus 102 to 110% of the diameter of the balls being used with the bridgestick.
The bridge is attached so that its plane is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stick and the end of the stick is positioned at the midpoint of the long dimension of the rectangle and slightly closer to the long edge having two notches than to the edge having three.
Length L of the bridge is determined by the depths d of the slots in the end and the fact that the distance from the bottom of the slot in either end to the other end is slightly greater than the standardized diameters of the balls being used with the bridgestick.

The bridge's leaves are suspended on axles (trunnions), with the counterweights in a riverbank pit.
At the outbreak of World War II, the new Western Avenue bridge was temporarily converted to a lift bridge, and machinery was installed in other spans on the Sanitary and Ship Canal to allow warships to reach the Gulf of Mexico.
Vertical lift bridges, with towers at each end to raise a center span, are found on three Calumet River railroad crossings, on Torrence Avenue, and at Amtrak's Union Station approach near 18th and Canal.

Retractable bridge extension system - Patent 6757926   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
A bridge extension bumper (32) is mechanically coupled to the bridge extension (30) and dampens contact between the bridge extension (30) and the vehicle (14).
The bridge extension 30 is formed such that along a lower contour 50, of the lower surface 46, the bridge extension 30 maintains at least a predetermined distance from the strake 28 when mated to the aircraft 14, to prevent interference with the strake 28.
For example, the extension bumpers 32 may be coupled to the bridge extension 30 on a vehicle side 56 of the bridge extension 30 to provide dampening when mating the bridge extension 30 to the aircraft 14, between the bridge extension 30 and the fuselage 20.

As in the usual "circus" technique, bridge plates 24 have been lowered to form two tracks bridging the ends of adjacent flatcars so as to form a roadway along the joined beds of the flatcars, and a ramp 26 is located at the end of the train.
Control levers 90 are provided to control the retraction and extension of the telescoping members to form the movable roadway 38, and to move the unit 28 to a new desired position.

 Suspension Bridges
To cross the bridge correctly the person should lie face down on top of the rope, hook one ankle onto the rope and leave the other leg hanging straight down to lower the center of gravity for balance.
Two longer pickets are driven in either side of the spars at each end of the suspension bridge to prevent the spars rolling sideways and to support the handrails.
Alternatively, the foot bridge can comprise of three spars (for additional width) resting on three pickets and in either case the foot bridge spars can be lashed together for rigidity.

 Inventor touts  bridge barrier
Bridge directors have long claimed, a barrier must be Movable so that four traffic lanes can be maintained in either direction during heavy commutes.
Bridge directors have long held that such a barrier is unworkable because its two-foot thickness would take up too much space on a span where traffic lanes already are unusually narrow.
Brown, the one Bridge Board member who attended yesterday’s unveiling, said Guernsey’s system causes him to believe that the Bridge Board should reconsider its stance that a barrier to prevent head-on crashes is unworkable.
