Teflon-coated intraoral tissue retraction cord - Patent 5540588
Retraction cord 5 including the non-toxic material may be placed between tooth 1 and its adjacent gumline 3 by way of conventional techniques and tools used for placement of conventional gingival retraction cord.
Retraction cord 5 according to an embodiment of this invention is shown disposed within periodontal sulcus 6, or in other words within the periodontal space between tooth 1 and its adjacent gum tissue 3.
The disposition of dental retraction cord 5 in periodontal sulcus 6 reflects or retracts gum tissue 3 from the tooth structure to be worked on so as to ensure adequate visibility of and access to the surface of tooth 1.

Therapeutic Retraction of the Foreskin in Childhood
Retraction of the foreskin alone is a simple and effective alternative to circumcision in managing most boys with a symptomatic, non-retractable prepuce.
Acceleration of the natural processes by formally retracting the prepuce under general anaesthesia is a logical approach to the problem of symptoms due to a non-retractable, non-fibrosed foreskin in childhood.
In 12 cases the result of retraction was considered to be unsatisfactory due either to symptomatic recurrence (eight cases) or to persistent non-retractablity of the foreskin (four).

Reasons for Retraction and Citations to Publications...[Fulltext, July 15 JAMA. 1998;280:296-297] (c) AMA 1998
A 1-year period after publication of the retraction was inserted before a citation was considered as postretraction to allow for indexing of the retraction to be in place.
Retraction was classified as being due to misconduct only if the statement of retraction clearly admits to wrongdoing on the part of one or more of the authors.
The results of this study strongly indicate that retraction of a publication, even though the retraction may be visible in the journal and is clearly noted in the MEDLINE database, does not ensure that all subsequent researchers will be alerted to the retraction and will cease making reference to the retracted work.

 Retraction
The key to recognizing retraction of the tympanic membrane is the position of the lateral process of the malleus and foreshortening of the long process of the malleus.
When negative pressure in the middle ear space retracts the tympanic membrane the lateral process may be pulled superiorly so that the orientation of the lateral process becomes shifted towards 9 or 10 o'clock.
Another sign of negative pressure in the middle ear space and retraction of the membrane is the loss of space between the lateral process and the pars flacida (see green arrow on right diagram).

Gingival retraction cords incorporating propylhexedrine - Patent 6375461
For example, it would be an advancement in the art to provide a retraction cord which included a vasoconstrictor in combination with an iron-based hemostatic agent which did not result in discoloration of the retraction cord, the patient's teeth and gums, or the fingers of the dental practitioner attempting to place the retraction cord.
Thus, when a knitted retraction cord is packed into the sulcus, it is compressed, and the "memory" in the retraction cord causes the cord to gently push outward against the gingival tissue.
In the case where a knitted retraction cord is used, the resilience and flexibility in the transverse direction of the knitted retraction cord allows the cord 40 to conform to irregularities, such as the margin 58 of the tooth 56.

Chaucer's Retraction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chaucer's Retraction is the final section of The Canterbury Tales.
It is not even certain if the retraction was an integral part of the Canterbury Tales or if it was the equivalent of a death bed confession which became attached to this his most popular work.
Retractions, often called palinodes, were common in works of this era and the bawdy nature of some of Chaucer's works possibly needed forgiveness.

A retraction is a public statement, either in print, or by verbal statement that is made to correct a previously made statement that was incorrect, invalid, or in error.
An alteration that changes the main point of the original statement is generally referred to as a retraction while an alteration that leaves the main point of a statement intact is usually referred to simply as a correction.

 Retraction Pkts
Retraction pockets occur when chronic inflammation and negative middle ear pressure produce atrophy and atelectasis of the tympanic membrane.
This produces a defect or pocket which is usually located in the posterior superior area of the pars tensa or in the pars flacida.
This condition is called adhesive otitis media, which may lead to erosion of the ossicles and ossicular discontinuity, or the development of a cholesteatoma.

Essential Chaucer: The Retraction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
Traces the history of interpretation of Chaucer's Retraction from the early rejection of it as inauthenic, hypothetically the result of Chaucer's late-life senility or monkish addition, to more recent acceptence and attempts to reconcile its tone with the rest of Chaucer's corpus.
Documents the conventional nature of Chaucer's Retraction by exploring the rhetorical commonplaces of medieval prologues and conclusions, and by identifying analogous epilogues in French, Latin, and German.
Surveys criticism of Chaucer's Retraction, and divides the piece into two portions: the Parson's concluding address and an "interpolated middle" which lists Chaucer's literary "sins." In light of the penitential theory of Parson's Tale, modified from Pennafort's Summa casuum de poenitentia, the Retraction suggests Chaucer's hope for his spiritual future.

Penis panic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Genital retraction syndrome (GRS), generally considered a culture-specific syndrome, is a condition in which an individual is overcome with the belief that his/her external genitals—or also, in females, breasts—are retracting into the body, shrinking, or in some male cases, may be imminently removed or disappear.
Genital retraction syndrome in Southeast Asia is known as Koro (Malaysian/Indonesian) or Shook yang (suo yang) in Chinese cultures.
It seems probable that, in a culture where sexual anxiety is high and stories exist of death by genital retraction, a man in the right frame of mind could panic at the observation that his genitals are shrinking in response to cold or anxiety.

 Chaucer's Retraction (general note)
Even Manly and Rickert, who doubted it was genuine, conceded that the evidence for the legitimacy of the Parson's Tale and Retraction "is as good as for any part of the CT" (M-R 4.527).
What is interesting here therefore is not the account of Chaucer's so-called "Deathbed Repentance" but rather the context in which that account is placed -- in a discussion of repentance that comes too late, after the damage has been done and when it is too late to remedy the consequences of the act.
Be that as it may, the Retraction ends the Canterbury Tales with a final complexity; repentant or not, Chaucer, as usual, slyly leaves the resolution to the reader.
