By contrast, Alegretti approaches Retrocognitions from the leading-edge branch of consciousness research called conscientiology, which he has been researching since the early 1980s, in which consciousness (the essence, soul, or ego) is studied from a multidimensional perspective.
He then anatomizes all aspects of the retrocognition phenomenon, beginning with an analysis of possible objects of the experience, possible subjects, possible causes, and the varying degrees of certainty that are attainable.

The Retrocognition course strives to study, in a comprehensive way, the mechanism of the retrocognition.
The course examines spontaneous, forced, and voluntary retrocognitions, discussing the factors that predispose or inhibit such recollections (case studies will be presented).
Beyond discussing the recollection of previous physical lives, the course also discusses the recollections of the intermissive periods (or between-lives periods), which is a much more fruitful and advanced type of retrocognition.

Titus Rivas - The survivalist interpretation of recent studies of near-death experiences
The retrocognitive variant of the false memory hypothesis interprets memories of veridical experiences during the stage of flat EEG as follows.
Retrocognition is a very strange hypothesis for NDEs, because it implies that a patient would not use ESP to perceive events that happen between the stage of flat EEG and complete awakening, but would instead focus on events that have already taken place.
It cannot explain cases of NDEs in which there is paranormal perception of events that took place during flat EEG but also of events which occurred during the awakening process itself and in which such a perception is experienced by the patient as part of a coherent and continuous stream of consciousness.

I certainly do not believe this to be the case, but I will limit myself here to the question whether the survival of consciousness during a flat EEG has any implications for consciousness after death.
Unless we prefer to embrace the less parsimonious hypothesis of retrocognition (ESP concerning events in the past), some NDEs certainly appear to indicate that consciousness may survive clinical death when the brain shows a flat EEG-pattern.
