Topic: Retrofit

  Implementing Stormwater Retrofits
Retrofits are structural stormwater management measures for urban watersheds designed to help minimize accelerated channel erosion, reduce pollutant loads, promote conditions for improved aquatic habitat, and correct past mistakes.
Retrofits come is many shapes and sizes from large regional retention ponds that provide a variety of controls to small on-site facilities providing only water quality treatment for smaller storms.
Most retrofits are undersized when compared to their new development counterparts and space is at a premium in urban areas where many maintenance provisions such as access roads, stockpiling or staging areas are either absent or woefully undersized.

Weidlinger Associates is performing a seismic retrofit of the suspended structure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge.
The retrofit design developed by the firm is intended to strengthen the vulnerable elements by altering the dynamic performance of the structure.
Retrofit details introduced on the bridge include tower base reinforcement, structural fuses on each of the side spans, release of the stiffening truss at both the tower and the anchorage bent, and viscous dampers.

WSDOT - Independent Review of the Retrofit Proposal for the Alaskan Way Viaduct   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
A retrofitted viaduct would be damaged beyond repair and may in fact collapse in the event of a strong enough earthquake – experts predict there is a one in ten chance of this earthquake happening in the next 50 years.
Previous estimates of a full retrofit that came closer to meeting the earthquake standards were between 80 and 90 percent of the full replacement.
However, even this full retrofit would not have as long a life as a full replacement nor would it give drivers wider lanes and shoulders on which to pull out of the way in the event of an accident.

How Do I Decide Between Retrofit or New Construction Windows? at DoItYourself.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
I understand that with retrofit windows the old window is removed and the new window is installed into the old window frame, which certainly cuts down on labor.
Retrofit windows are installed into existing frames, and if those frames are not plumb or square, there may be problems.
Retrofit windows, on the other hand, use the existing frame as the opening in which to install the new windows.

Seismic retrofit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is typically the lowest level of retrofit applied to fire fighting stations, public safety (police) command centers, and the like and is often the most economical level of retrofit and design for transportation infrastructure such as rail and highway roadways, bridges, and tunnels.
One form of retrofit is to drill numerous holes into the surface of the wall, and secure short L-shaped sections of rebar to the surface of each hole with epoxy adhesive.
For retrofit, additional supports may be added or it may be better to simply remove the extension and replace it with lighter materials, with special piping replacing the flue tile and a wood structure replacing the masonry.

The rise of retrofit metal | September 2002 | Professional Roofing Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Because a retrofit framing system will become a structural component of an existing building structure, an engineered system supplied by a metal roof system manufacturer or supplier of retrofit framing systems or properly engineered framing system needs to be part of the equation.
To begin to understand retrofit framing systems, it is important to understand the various members of such a system and how they interact with each other.
Retrofit framing must not rely on the support of an existing roof panel's ribs because the panels are not designed to support a point load that would be applied if a hat section or Z purlin rested on the ribs.

The Seismic Retrofit of Historic Buildings - Oldhouseweb.com
The two goals of the seismic retrofit in historic buildings are life safety and the protection of older and historic buildings during and after an earthquake.
Planned seismic retrofit work may add between $10 and $100 per square foot to the cost of rehabilitation work depending on the level of intervention, the condition of the building, and whether work will be undertaken while the building is occupied.
In many cases, actual retrofit expenses have been lower than anticipated because a careful analysis of the existing building was made that took the durability and performance of existing historic materials into consideration.

William Schock had this to say about their retrofit guidelines: "Before we adopted this standard in 1994 we found the contractors were doing retrofits that were both a waste of time and material, and the homeowners were paying thousands of dollars for retrofits that would not even remotely protect their homes.
To properly retrofit a house a contractor must have a good grasp of the engineering involved or he must follow rules dictated by a seismic retrofit building code.

 How it Works
The primary goal of seismic retrofit is to attach the house to the foundation so it doesn´t fall off the foundation during an earthquake.
If any one of these three areas is not adequately retrofitted, the house will be susceptible to damage in an earthquake.
Most people are concerned about bolting their house but history has shown that unbraced cripple walls are the first area to fail in earthquakes, often leaving the residents homeless.
