Topic: Retropinnidae

  Abstracts 51(3)
—We used mitochondrial DNA sequences to determine the phylogenetic placement of southern smelts (Retropinnidae), a group of diadromous fishes endemic to New Zealand and Australia.
Our analysis indicates that Retropinnidae and Osmeridae together represent the sister group to the southern hemisphere galaxiid fishes (Galaxiidae).
Although equally weighted parsimony analysis of morphological data rejects the molecular hypothesis (Osmeridae + Retropinnidae), implementation of a range of weighting schemes suggests that incongruence is non-significant under asymmetric character transformation models.

IngentaConnect The New Zealand common smelt: biology and ecology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
The common smelt is one of the most widespread indigenous freshwater fishes in New Zealand.
One other member of the family Retropinnidae, Stokellia anisodon(Stokell), is present but is confined to a small region of the South Island.
There are many diadromous as well as river and lake resident populations, the latter, sometimes a result of introductions to serve as forage fish for trout.

There are two New Zealand species in the Retropinnidae family, the common smelt and Stokells smelt.
This family of fishes, known as the southern smelts, is also found in Australia, but the two species we have here are unique to this country.
