"Return to Never Land" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Return to Never Land is the first sequel in a while that has skipped the direct-to-video market.
Captain Hook and his pirates return to kidnap Wendy, but they end up with her daughter (family resemblances can be so hazardous at times).
However, Return to Never Land is a safe and non-offensive outing for the pre-school and early elementary crowd.

Return to Never Land - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Return to Never Land is a 2002 animated feature produced by the DisneyToons studio in Sydney, Australia and released by Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution.
In the novel, the Lost Boys returned to London with Wendy and grew up like normal children, but in Return to Never Land they have stayed as young and immortal as Peter Pan himself.
In Return to Never Land, they are called to attention and most of them state the names Barrie gave them in the book: Slightly, in the fox suit; Nibs, in the rabbit suit; the Twins in the raccoon suits; and Tootles, in the skunk suit.

 Return to Never Land (2002)
In Never Land, Tink (who still has her 1950s figure, thanks for asking) starts off jealous of Jane, but they end up bonding after Jane’s renewed belief in fairies brings Tink from the edge of death — even though it was Jane’s disbelief that put her life in jeopardy in the first place.
Jane never acts as a surrogate mother to Peter or the Lost Boys as Wendy did; instead, she becomes "the first Lost Girl." Peter Pan depicted a young girl modeling the role of a wife and mother; this sequel depicts a young girl embracing childhood and fun and playfulness.
Return to Never Land is a valentine to adults who have grown up but never grown old, to parents who seek to pass on their own childhood worlds and stories to their children.

 Moda Magazine (Modamag.com) Film/Movie Review
The knee-jerk reaction to "Return To Never Land" is to scoff and bemoan the death of Disney’s creativity with Walt’s passing.
The lack of true balance between the two sides of the plot leaves "Never Land" with an unstable mood, as if half of the film is filler, even for a picture this short.
The Peter Pan in "Never Land" is still the same precocious, borderline violent prankster who won’t grow up as in the 1953 version.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Return to Never Land
Return to Never Land is as spiritless as the ridiculous Jonatha Brooke pop songs that heavy-handedly compliment Jane's mopings.
Return to Never Land's England scenes are genuinely touching, especially when an older Wendy threatens to get in on the action.
Return to Never Land is preceded by the 1948 short Pluto's Fledgling.

 Cinescape - Home - Editorial
RETURN TO NEVER LAND is a mostly harmless exploitation of viewer fondness for the original 1953 Walt Disney Pictures animated PETER PAN, adapted from Sir James M. Barrie’s fantasy novel.
The returning characters — Peter, Hook, Smee — are all drawn to be entirely faithful to their 1953 selves, with Corey Burton and Jeff Bennett doing heroic jobs in reproducing the voices of, respectively, Hook and Smee.
The Never Land adventure itself is a bit on the tame side, although there’s enough comical peril — courtesy of Hook and a giant orange octopus — to satisfy most members of the movie’s target demographic.

Movie Review - Return to Never Land - eFilmCritic
When Jane gets to Never Land and is rescued by Pan, she has a hard time learning not to be serious like an adult all the time.
When she gets to Never Land, she is too serious for the Pan and the lost boys, and they tell her as much.
However, in the initial scenes in Never Land, Pan and the lost boys imply to Jane that it is a bad thing to lose the ability to have fun as a child.

Return to Never Land (2002): Harriet Owen, Blayne Weaver, Corey Burton, Kath Soucie - PopMatters Film Review
On her arrival in Never Land, she's more of a grrrl than Wendy ever even dreamed of being, punching both the pirates and Peter Pan when they get on her nerves.
It's also not clear to me whether Jane's time in Never Land is supposed to make her more childlike or more motherly -- one unsettling idea is that, as a young female, Jane should be both.
Return to Never Land is billed as a musical, but there are few songs and none is remarkable or even catchy.

Return to Never Land - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
"Return to Never Land" briefly reprises one song from Disney's "Peter Pan" ("The Second Star to the Right"), adds three others that are hopelessly out of period and tacks on a golden oldie, "Do You Believe in Magic?," that is thematically correct and musically as inconsistent as the new compositions.
"Return to Never Land" picks up a generation later in war-torn London (presumably World War I), where the young adult Wendy (voiced by Kathie Soucie) is married to Edward (Roger Rees) and has two children, the skeptical Jane (Harriet Owen) and the younger, trusting Danny (Andrew McDonough).
Wendy mythologizes Peter Pan and the Never Land residents to her children.

Movie Photos: Return to Never Land
Disney's RETURN TO NEVER LAND, the animated sequel to its classic PETER PAN, is direct-to-video material that is being released to the theaters during competition-free February.
Once in Never Land with Peter Pan (Blayne Weaver) and the Lost Boys, Jane goes on to have similar adventures to the ones that her mother had a generation earlier.
Although RETURN TO NEVER LAND is almost an acceptable substitute, a re-release of the original would have been preferable.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Return to Never Land | Deseret Morning News Web edition
The reason so many of Disney's animated sequels have gone directly to video rather than playing on the big screen is that, frankly, they can't hold a candle to their classic forebears.
It turns out the villain is still seeking revenge on Peter (Blayne Weaver), who must rescue Jane, as well as convince her to believe in the power of fantasy and imagination — for her own good as well as his.
"Return to Never Land" is rated G, though it does contain scenes of animated violence (including slapstick bits, sword fighting and some wartime mayhem) as well as mildly vulgar humor (including one flatulence joke).

Movie Review - Return to Never Land - www.ericdsnider.com - The Official Website of Eric D. Snider
The Walt Disney company has mined several of its classic films for direct-to-video sequels, including follow-ups to "Beauty and the Beast," "Lady and the Tramp" and "The Little Mermaid." "Toy Story 2," famously, was also to be direct-to-video, until Disney realized how good it was and put it in cineplexes, where it belonged.
So one hopes "Return to Never Land" -- the sequel to 1953's animated "Peter Pan" -- is being released in theaters for the same reason "Toy Story 2" was: It's just SO GOOD, it would be a shame to waste it on video.
"Return to Never Land" clearly cost a lot to make -- the animation is much better than most video sequels -- and if you put it in theaters first, you can charge people twice, once at the box office and again when it comes out on tape.

DVD REVIEW: "RETURN TO NEVER LAND"
While certainly no classic - as it's not in the same league as its predecessor - and featuring both varying levels of animation quality and a predictable storyline, the film is rather enjoyable, occasionally delightful, and should entertain kids of all ages, particularly if they're young or at least young at heart.

LVJeff reviews: Return to Never Land
It does have some of the usual Disney-sequel weaknesses -- the new adventure feels like a rehash of the original story (Wendy's daughter now goes to Never Land instead of Wendy), and the protagonist follows the recycled pattern of starting off wrong-headed, only to see the light and the error of her ways.
Return to Never Land is mostly good work, but still weighed down by many second-rate elements.
Had they not existed, Return to Never Land could have been seen as a decent, honest attempt at continuing a beloved story, like The Rescuers Down Under was to The Rescuers.

DVD Verdict Review - Return To Never Land
The most unavoidable problem with Return to Never Land is the fact that the voice talent has changed dramatically, most notably in Hook and his bumbling sidekick Smee.
In the days of Walt Disney it was decided that the company would never stoop to making sequels to their beloved animated films (Disney felt that it might sap the creativity out of his team to rehash what they'd already accomplished).

Disney covets parents' pocketbooks with cursory, uncalled for sequel 'Return to Never Land'
With this week's theatrical release of "Return to Never Land" and the video release of "Cinderella 2" on February 26, Disney has blatantly abandoned any and all pretense of making cartoons for love, for art or for the entertainment of children.
(Disney children are always short at least one parent.) She's too practical to believe any of the bedtime stories her mother tells about her adventures in Never Land -- that is until the night Captain Hook and his crew kidnap the girl as bait to lure Peter Pan into a trap.

Apollo Movie Guide's Review of Return to Never Land
Return to Never Land is a throwback to the classic style of animation, making the ‘return’ in its title ironic, since the film is a return to a style so visually marvellous — a marvel that seems to be lost in some sort of ‘never land’ for animated films between 1995 and 2001.
In the wake of such a moral encumbrance, Jane finds it reasonable to sacrifice the delights of her inner child, and imagination, at the hands of adult responsibility — rejecting any fanciful stories of juvenile freedom expressed in the example of the supposed Peter Pan, of whom her mom speaks.
The chuckles of irony roar loudly once Captain Hook abducts Jane, and forces the truth of Never Land on her — where she discovers the validity of the boyish Peter Pan.
