To further investigate the nature and timing of emplacement processes acting on the Reunion hotspot track, we report the nature of isostatic compensation of all major features that have been effected/emplaced by the hotspot.
Radiogenic isotopes and trace element ratios (La/Sm) show a gradual fading of the Reunion hotspot influence with increasing distance from the Mascarene Plateau, in agreement with a diminishing influence of the plume-derived material.
In this system, the interaction between ridge and hotspot began when hotspot and ridge got closer and continues till the present where the ridge has already passed over the plume and the distance between plume and ridge is now increasing.

Hotspot (geology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In geology, a hotspot is a location on the Earth's surface that has experienced active volcanism for a long period of time.
Tuzo Wilson came up with the idea in 1963 that volcanic chains like the Hawaiian Islands result from the slow movement of a tectonic plate across a "fixed" hot spot deep beneath the surface of the planet.
Hotspots were thought to be caused by a narrow stream of hot mantle convecting up from the mantle-core boundary called a mantle plume [1], the latest geological evidence is pointing to upper-mantle convection as a cause[2][3][4].

Beyond the Plume Myth   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The hotspots associated with all of these events (except possibly for Siberia, which has left no track) are embedded in slower than average mantle and these presumably hot regions can be traced down to 200 to 300 km.
The 'tail' part of the hotspot track may be a southerly propagating fracture tapping a shallow, enriched mantle of the Indian Ocean, or a huge shear zone, and reflects the stress field of the Indian Oceanic lithosphere, not its displacement history” (VII pp.
The locations of large igneous provinces, hotspots and hotspot tracks are strongly controlled by lithospheric architecture and history: they are not placed randomly on the globe, indifferent to the surface geology; neither are large igneous provinces sudden chance events within the vastness of geological time (which plume theories typically allege)” (VII p.

The observation of such an interaction while the CIR and Reunion Island are 1000 km away from each other suggests that the Deccan-Reunion hotspot had a long history of interaction with the Carlsberg Ridge (CR) and the CIR in previous stages of its history.
This interaction started as early as the hotspot inception by the Indian plate, triggering rifting between India and the Seychelles Block and the opening of the CR between A29r and A27 (65-61 Ma).
The geometrical configuration of the CR-CIR and the hotspot suggests that, between A26 and A20 (58-43 Ma), the CR was close to the hotspot.

Reunion is home to one of the world's most active volcanos, the Piton de la Fournaise, which has erupted more than 170 times since the mid-17th century.

Dominated by the nation of Madagascar, the fourth largest island on Earth, the hotspot also includes the independent nations of Seychelles (including Aldabra), the Comoros, Mauritius (including Rodrigues), and the French overseas departments of Réunion, Mayotte (one of the Comoros) and the Iles Esparses around Madagascar.
Because Madagascar and the continental Seychelles broke off from the Gondwanaland supercontinent more than 160 million years ago, the hotspot is a living example of species evolution in isolation.
The natural vegetation of this hotspot is quite diverse.

 A fiery debate about volcanoes
Estimates of the number of hotspots in the world range from a handful to more than a hundred, but most scientists agree to a list of several dozen.
When a mid-ocean ridge moves right across a hotspot, as the Reunion hotspot in the Indian Ocean has done, the ridge doesn't excavate the hotspot; instead, volcanism jumps from one plate to the other.
The evidence is strong for half a dozen hotspots, but others may owe their persistent existence to different mechanisms.

Madagascar is characterized by tropical rainforest on the eastern side, dry deciduous forests on the western side, and spiny desert in the far south of the country.
No other country or hotspot comes close in terms of primate family-level endemism, with some five families and 15 genera endemic, and a total of 72 taxa in all (with more still to be described).
Given the importance of the hotspot, it is not surprising that there have been major efforts in biodiversity conservation, and the hotspot, in particular Madagascar, may be entering a new era in terms of biodiversity protection.

Deccan Traps - Article from FactBug.org - the fast Wikipedia mirror site
It is postulated that the Deccan Traps eruption is associated with a deep mantle plume or hotspot.
The plume or hotspot, known as the Réunion hotspot, is suspected of causing both the Deccan Traps eruption and opening the rift that once separated the Seychelles plateau from India.
Seafloor spreading at the boundary between the Indian and African Plates subsequently pushed India north over the hotspot, which now lies under Réunion island in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India.

Biogeography: The role of the ice ages in the dispersal of the genus Phelsuma
The separation of the Mascarene Plateau was accompanied by a tremendous outpouring of basaltic lava from this hotspot, giving birth to a mass of igneous rock called the Deccan Traps, which today covers much of western India.
Because the Mascarene Plateau was just beginning to separate from India at the time, much of this basalt covers the plateau as well, though the eruptions did not smother all of the older granite.
