  R.E.M.: Reveal (2001): Reviews
It's a landmark album for REM and the fans who stayed faithful, a shot in the arm for music in 2001 and - unless they're too foolish to accept it - a long-awaited treat for all the listeners who bailed out after Monster.
Reveal is a lush, dreamy pop mood-piece that hovers in the realm of rumination and introspection.

CLUAS | Album Reviews | REM 'Reveal'
Reveal was recorded in Vancouver, Georgia, Dublin and Miami but according to Stipe it was the intermittent trips around Europe that halted any creative blocks before they became chronic.
Whilst 'Up' was not necessarily a poor album there was a patchiness, a cut and paste feel to it that could not be ignored.
What makes their albums so sustainable is their ability to create songs that are subtle and less immediate than others.

R.E.M.: Reveal - PopMatters Music Review
Reveal is better than most other current pop rock albums, but it's not what an R.E.M. album used to be.
The album is drowned in a wash of keyboards and strings and sappy, morose songwriting.
I hope this is only a transition album for R.E.M. and they'll soon claw their way out of the melancholy, morass of Up and fly towards the bright, promising future of the fusion found between beautifully crafted pop and electronic inventiveness, as heard on tracks like "I've Been High".

Reveal is the sound of a band who have moved beyond feeling the need to change or to prove themselves to each new generation, but still want to make music that expresses a passion for life.
Lyrically this album is one of their strongest to date, the lyrics are included in the inlay which is a nice treat.
Reveal is a slow building gem, given a chance this album has a number of beautiful tracks, Michael Stipe conjures up emotional, thought provoking lyrics and the music is superb, ever atmospheric with dark and uplifting bouts.

Reveal continues many trends from Up, including looping and bland pop mixing, especially in the second half of the album.
The first half of Reveal hints at a new beginning for R.E.M., a sort of combination of the old and the new.

The sound of this album is strangely counter-rock, filled with flighty, drawn-out numbers and sweeping combinations of dreamy fact and fiction.
The first radio single from the album, "Imitation of Life" manages to make a cliché unique ("you want the greatest thing / the greatest thing since bread came sliced"), a testament to the bands continued lyrical ability.

The full history of those 21 years is too extensive to go into here, but the four enterprising musicians made some amazing albums on their way to becoming possibly the world's biggest rock band by the early '90s.
But through the making of that album and its subsequent tour, it was realized that this version of R.E.M. rocked on its own terms, and didn't have to "make up" for the lack of Berry.
But Reveal is a grower, and the more one listens even to potentially boring creations like "She Just Wants To Be," the more one appreciates the layers of tones and sounds that complete them.

The album is so muddled and repetitive that it's almost impossible to pick out any kind of individual moments within the album's framework.
When I put on most R.E.M. albums and close my eyes, my mind is flooded with crystalline imagery, with miniature explosions, with the very moments of clarity that Stipe described; when I put on Reveal and close my eyes, I fall asleep.

Building on examples from earlier albums, "Beat A Drum", "Summer Turns To High" and "Beachball" are musical homages to The Beach Boys, of whom both Mike Mills and Peter Buck are major fans.
Although it was promoted as a return to form, with early comparisons to Automatic for the People, Reveal actually sounds more like a cross between the sunny sounds of Out of Time and the electronica of Up.
In fairness to the album, the critical reaction to Reveal was warmer than the notices which greeted Up in 1998, particularly in the UK where it reached #1 with healthy sales.

Although it can’t touch Automatic, a CD which is an easy contender for the best album of all time, Reveal is leaning towards that more gentle, less in-your-face song that is easier to sing along to.
