At the close of his brief sojourn at Caesarea our Lord took Peter and James and John with him into "an high mountain apart," and was transfigured before them.
He is now no more the unreliable, changeful, self-confident man, ever swaying between rash courage and weak timidity, but the stead-fast, trusted guide and director of the fellowship of believers, the intrepid preacher of Christ in Jerusalem and abroad.
This subject had awakened new interest at Antioch, and for its settlement was referred to the council of the apostles and elders at Jerusalem.

Peter says that the false teachers he is addressing "walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness" 2:2:10; they "have eyes full of adultery" and they were constantly "beguiling unstable souls" vs. 14.
Revelation calls the false teachers Nicolaitans; but they are also called teachers of the way of Balaam; just as in 2 Peter and Jude.
Revelation does not stand isolated therefore from the religious milieu of the rest of the New Testament.

 Revelation
The "Revelation of John" is used in preference to "Revelation of Jesus Christ" because I want to stress that the revelation of Jesus Christ was given to John in a vision ("I (John) was in the Spirit") to write down and form a record.
The Revelation of John may contain both forms of prophecy, but even if that is true the most important aspect of prophecy evident in the Revelation of John is the content that bears upon our relationship with God and the communion of saints.
It took a revelation to Peter involving other saints to convince the early Jerusalem church that the gospel should be preached to not only the Jew but also the Gentile.

The Revelation of Peter was included among the canonical works in the Muratorian fragment, but it was noted that this book was found unsuitable by some for reading at the mass (perhaps this was because it contained such a vivid portrayal of the souls suffering in Hell).

Peter was no more important than any of the rest of the Twelve Apostles, and one need only look further to see that 'proud Peter' was soon knocked off his high horse, when he rebuked the Lord Jesus, (Who told the disciples He would be soon killed in Jerusalem), saying,
We do, however, refer to St. Peter as a "leader of the Apostles" because, among other things, he was the first to confess Jesus as the Christ and he was the first to stand and preach Christ at Pentecost.
Nobody says that Peter was the supreme infallible leader or that peter was the only importnat Church leader all the apostolic churches(Catholic and Orthodox) have the same belief and are authoritative, but Peter's Church has done the most to protect the message from Heresy.

The Revelation of Peter affords the earliest embodiment in Christian literature of those pictorial presentations of heaven and hell which have exercised so widespread and enduring an influence.
Its only parallels in canonical scripture, with the notable exception of the Second Epistle of Peter, are to be found in Isaiah lxvi., 24, Mark ix., 44, 48, and the parable of Dives and Lazarus in Luke xvi., 19.
It is called the Apocalypse of Peter, or the narrative of things revealed to him by Jesus Christ which had taken place from the beginning of the world and which shall take place till the end of the world or the second coming of Christ.

 Peter's Primacy In Scripture
Peter speaks for the whole group, and says Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
The fact that Peter denied Jesus later would fit with this, although if Peter had learned by way of an interior locution Peter might have had a clear message at the start, which later, by the time of the death of Jesus, had faded, and so Peter could deny Him.
In that they contradict Scripture, for 2 Peter 3:15-16 tells us that in St. Paul's Epistles, "there are many things hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction." Protestant twisting of this passage surely fits what Peter's Epistle said.

Apocalypse Of Peter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
100-125 C.E. The Apocalypse of Peter is the earliest Christian reference to the afterlife, describing in vivid detail the paradise of Heaven and the torments of Hell.
The work is quite early, for it was referenced by Clement and likely used by the author of the Apocalypse of Paul; It may even predate the canonical Apocalypse (Revelation) of John.
It is difficult to speculate why it fell out of favor in the orthodox church, except perhaps that it was often associated with the heretical Gospel of Peter.

Most of us know Revelation only from the letters to the churches in chapters 2 and 3 and the ascriptions of praise that have been used in oratorios and anthems.
I believe that, while much of the symbolic detail of Revelation will remain a mystery until the end times, there is much of its broad sweep that we can and ought to grasp.

I'm not the only one who noticed Revelation is written as an epistle, and the salutation ending it is that format commonly used by Paul in every epistle.
Yes, "John" is named 'six' times in the book of Revelation when counting the title, but such is also clever Pauline allegoric satire about John (a gotcha), whom Paul allegorically satired as one of the three top "dogs", saying "beware of dogs".
Due to the evidence I have to conclude Paul is writer of Revelation, not John, and so as not to restate what I've already written elsewhere, I refer any readers interested to Revelations of Revelation #6 for details.

Technically, "revelation" is a translation and "apocalypse" is a transliteration.
I would have preferred to standardize on "revelation," at least partly because "apocalypse" in modern usage carries with it the connotation of eschatological vision.
