Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations @ Halo-17.net
On the new double-album, "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
A couple of years on, I still feel justified at the harsh treatment that I doled out to that album, despite all the protests and the hatemail that I received for my review, because it was simply a bad album, bereft of any ideas or spark.
Still, after an album this good, it's beginning to look like the previous album was just a temporary hiccough, and I for one, am happy to have E back and writing the good stuff.

Eels: Blinking Lights and Other Revelations Aversion.com Review
Even for E’s fiercely loyal fan base, it may be clear that with Blinking Lights and Other Revelations, he’s taken things a little too far.
With a little restraint and a lot of pruning, Blinking Lights could have been a pretty powerful, if totally disjointed, 12-track album.
While E’s wandering songwriting gives the album breadth, his constantly shifting aesthetic makes it tough to find a common thread through the album’s 33 songs; making sense of the avalanche of songs is impossible, outside of any insular Eels-as-Eels considerations.

Blinking Lights and Other Revelations by Eels - NerdSmart.com
Overall, Blinking Lights and Other Revelations is a fascinating album.
What immediately caught my eye before I heard Blinking Lights and Other Revelations was that it was a double album.
The album's several varieties of title track paint even the sight of the blinking lights on the doomed airplane's wings (one of several causes of familial death) as having a sort of bittersweet splendor.

Amazon.co.uk: Blinking Lights and Other Revelations: Music
This is a grown-up album about being a grown-up, and in the years it took to create, Everett has done a lot of growing up, and dealt with a lot of tragedy: his mother died of cancer, his sister committed suicide, and his cousin was on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11.
Much more akin to Electro-Shock than any of their others I have a feeling that in a year or so this album will be played fairly infrequently, at least in its entirety.
E, to write and record Blinking Lights and Other Revelations, but the end result is no less than a masterpiece.

Eels: Blinking Lights and Other Revelations - PopMatters Music Review
Blinking Lights and Other Revelations, the new album from Everett's Eels, is a celebration of these small moments that give our lives meaning.
E is one of the best songwriters America has to offer, and he has made as personal, poignant, and ultimately redeeming an album that you are ever going to hear.
Inspired by the car trip in the Bergman film Wild Strawberries, Blinking Lights… took seven years to complete and is meant as a reflection of E's entire life up to this point, which has seen more than its fair share of tragedy.

As the song pass by on the first disc, I’m struck at how complete the vision of Blinking Lights is. I wouldn’t say that it’s anything near concise—it meanders in every direction—but Everett has managed to put together a musically cohesive album that has a beginning, middle, and end.
Variations on the Theme from Blinking Lights are dispersed throughout the album.
That’s right—Blinking Lights is a rock opera, albeit a chaotic and bizarre and not-at-all-linear one.

Eels - Blinking Lights And Other Revelations: Silent Uproar
I felt lost in space after my first trip through the new Eels album, thinking that surely the blinking lights referenced those of satellites, floating lonesomely in the dark abyss.
Not only did I connect with the album, but throughout the next couple days it beautifully ushered me through my bout of random depression and gently led me to a cathartic conclusion in which a handful of woefully upbeat and seemingly misplaced songs suddenly stood out as being perfectly placed and, well, just right.

RTE.ie Entertainment - Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
'Blinking Lights and Other Revelations' has more in common with the plaintive refrains of 'Electro-Shock Blues' than the sweet, hard-rocking rage of 'Souljacker' or 'Shootenanny!', but instead of an intimate little set of songs, E has chosen the widescreen canvas of a double album.
But the lightness and brevity of many of the tracks prevent the album from feeling too much like an indulgent sprawl.

Dreary, low-tempo-ed and storytelling, Lights is an album of everyday life, and the questions and results that follow.
With the release of Blinking Lights and Other Revelations (Vagrant, 2005), Eels have transcended downward into a somber, sorrowful state.
The upbeat tracks that are a part of the album seem spontaneous, and don’t follow the guidelines that were previously set by the band’s pace.

 Record Review (Detroit Metro Times)
Supergrass continues this trend, with the band again curtailing straight-up punk rock and party interests for a more complex, Revolver -esque moodiness filled with the type of lyrical banter and tongue-in-cheek revelations that come with exacting musical talent and a broadened experience.
The album expanded the band’s regular guitar-bass-drums rock attack with deftly produced horn arrangements, numerous organs and strategically placed theremin, favoring pop multidimensionality over the rock-from-the-hip expediency of earlier Britain-meets-Green Day-isms.
Similarly, strings are also prominent on Supergrass, accentuating the sense of personal inconsistency and lyrical confusion already pronounced by the undecided rock seesaw of the music.

Holland has no dramatic revelations or bold new theories to offer, but his narrative serves to remind us all over again of what an extraordinary man his grandfather was--and how much he influenced the art of the 20th century.
What makes The Wilde Album ultimately moving, and unique, is Holland's use of rare family photos and personal material.
Holland begins by lamenting the dissolution and loss of Wilde's scrapbooks and albums in the debtor sale of the author's entire household.

Love Letters is a delightful collection of standards that include a slow, sensual "I Got You Under My Skin," and a more jazz/pop flavored "The Very Thought Of You." Her take on "End Of A Love Affair" is worth the price of the album alone as it illustrates a perfect distillation of heartbreak.

With every other Borknagar album, a new group of people came together to interpret Øystein Brun's vision of "the yearning moods that entertain fantasy, and call revelations in our minds concerning the ancient past," as was set forth in the band's eponymous debut.
In fact, there isn't that much of a difference between this album and the band's last, in terms of sound; every Borknagar album has featured a marked shift from the previous one, but for the first time the shift is almost imperceptible.
This is an album that continues both the sonic and conceptual evolutions that started eight years and six albums ago.

The album is also for the most part mid paced, and even when the riffs are fast, it just doesn't seem to have much energy to it.
The band isn't as tight as on their albums (except for Doc on drums, who's every kick is like a chisel to your gut), but that doesn't detract from the songs.
