Revisionism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Historical revisionism is often viewed as a legitimate effort by historians to broaden the awareness of certain historical events by re-examining conventional wisdom.
In the late 19th century revisionism was used to describe writers such as Eduard Bernstein and Karl Kautsky who sought to revise the teachings of Karl Marx by claiming that a violent revolution was not necessary to achieve socialism.
Revisionism was one of the charges leveled at Titoists in a series of purges beginning in 1949 in Eastern Europe.

 Historical revisionism
An example is the theory that Franklin Roosevelt had prior knowledge about the attack on Pearl Harbor, and allowed it to happen: a revisionist proposal which contradicts the traditional story as well as the official presentation of history.
This type of revisionism effectively seeks to censor some of the less pleasant sides of history, lest it cause controversy or hurt feelings.
Revisionism has also been accused of becoming a "trendy" pursuit, and indeed, bold revisionist theories often get a lot of attention from historians and the media.

Conspiracy theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A conspiracy theory attempts to explain the ultimate cause of an event (usually a political, social, or historical event) as a secret, and often deceptive, plot by a covert alliance of powerful people or organizations rather than as an overt activity or as natural occurrence.
However, conspiracy theory is also used to indicate a narrative genre that includes a broad selection of (not necessarily related) arguments for the existence of grand conspiracies, any of which might have far-reaching social and political implications if true.
The term conspiracy theory is itself the object of a type of conspiracy theory, which argues that those using the term are manipulating their audience to disregard the topic under discussion, either in a deliberate attempt to conceal the truth, or as dupes of more deliberate conspirators.

Revisionism means the act of revising, correcting, improving or reinterpreting from new materials.
The fallacious theory that an Irish national consciousness only evolved at a very late stage in Irish historical development (usually asserts as the late 18the Century, presumably to account for the 1897 uprising), is one of the most popular arguments of the 'anti-nationalist' school.
Secondly: to justify Partion, a two-nation theory is proposed in that it is argued there exists a Catholic-Gaelic nation, nationalist in politics, and a Protestant-English-speaking nation, Unionist in politics.

The Noble Task of Revisionism by Murray N. Rothbard
Revisionism is an historical discipline made necessary by the fact that all States are governed by a ruling class that is a minority of the population, and which subsists as a parasitic and exploitative burden upon the rest of society.
The noble task of Revisionism is to de-bamboozle: to penetrate the fog of lies and deception of the State and its Court Intellectuals, and to present to the public the true history of the motivation, the nature, and the consequences of State activity.
Revisionism therefore reveals to us in all its starkness that the State Enemy in the United States is purely at home and not abroad.

Bernstein   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Bernstein rejected the arguments by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels for the violent overthrow of capitalism and instead, he developed the theory of revisionism, emphasizing evolutionary rather than revolutionary methods to bring about a socialist society (Steger).
Revisionism is perhaps best summed up by Bernstein’s statement that "the socialist movement is everything to me while what people commonly call the goal of Socialism is nothing"(Steger).
This was the result of both the deep roots that Marxism had taken within the party and the importance of Marxism as a rallying point for the workers.

It was said that the "theory of collapse" to which capitalism is heading was unsound, owing to the tendency of class antagonisms to become milder and less acute.
The theory of class struggle, applied by Marx to the question of the state and the socialist revolution, leads as a matter of course to the recognition of the political rule of the proletariat, of its dictatorship, i.e., of undivided power directly backed by the armed force of the people.
Marx's theory of "the state, i.e., the proletariat organized as the ruling class", is inseparably bound up with the whole of his doctrine of the revolutionary role of the proletariat in history.

Revisionism, especially of the moderate sort, has some attractions, not the least of which is that it has a way of balancing some traditional incompatibilist and traditional compatibilist concerns, the former in its diagnostic account and the latter in its prescriptive account.
McGinn's rejection of revisionism (understood as "deflationism" in his language) is tied to his view that traditional philosophical problems and their purported solutions are manifestations of a widespread human cognitive shortcoming.
A theory that offers a prescriptive proposal that differs from its diagnostic proposal (the central variety of revisionism with which we are concerned), but where the diagnosis is wrong and the prescription turns out (in spite of its intended revisionism) to describe the nature of responsibility would be an instance of inadvertent de re non-revisionism.

Revisionist theory addresses the alleged genocide of the European Jews, largely in homicidal gassing chambers and "vans,"and some of the related charges against the Germans of a particularly bizarre nature.
Because revisionist theory challenges the historicity of the German gassing chambers, revisionism directly challenges the common "moral"history of the 20th century.
So the idea that revisionist theory, in this context, argues that there was "no holocaust"is the (quite successful) political maneuvering of the professors to escape dealing with what revisionism does argue--primarily that the Germans did not mass-murder millions of Jews and others in homicidal gassing chambers as part of a program of racial genocide.

Sept. 11 Conspiracy Theory Book Lures French
PARIS (Reuters) - The French are lapping up a Sept. 11 conspiracy theory that argues the plane that smashed into the Pentagon never existed and that the world has been duped by a murky U.S. government plot.
And although French media has scoffed at Meyssan's musings, comparing them to the Roswell alien cover-up theory dramatized in the hit TV show "The X-Files," the public are intrigued.
Conspiracy theories like the rumors that swirled around the 1963 shooting of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, or the idea that man never actually set foot on the moon, are not uncommon in the United States, but are fairly rare in France.

 Presidential Lectures: Harold Bloom: Excerpts
A pivotal work of transition between Bloom's poetic theory and his later religious criticism, this book broadens "revisionism," making it the "fierce process" not only of poetry but also of personal life and society.
Bloom achieves this redefinition by shifting his emphasis from Gnosticism as a method of interpretation to Gnosticism as dialectical process, a move that allows him to equate Gnosis and poetry.
It is revisionism, and not repression or supposed sublimation, that is the discontent in civilization Freud most truly explored.

Leninism is the theory and tactic of the proletarian revolution in general, the theory and tactic of the dictatorship of the proletariat in detail.
Revisionism is as old as Marxism-Leninism itself and the instrument to hinder the loss of bourgeois`power, to bring it back to power or to recruit a new bourgeoisie for the re-conquest of power after its assumption by the proletariat.
Revisionism is forever dangerous, but not an imperative insoluble appendage, or part, or element of Marxism-Leninism (in the sense of the Maoist theory that revisionism is needed as a counter-part, as a »necessary« condition of the development of Marxism-Leninism).

It is a party theory — the theory of a movement, for a movement; the theory of revolutionary struggle for socialism and communism; the theory of the working class vanguard of that struggle; a class-biased and class-interested theory.
But dogmatism and revisionism are alike importations into Marxism of bourgeois ideology, and its corruption by the influence of bourgeois ideology — dogmatism by its refusal of questioning, revisionism by its refusal to probe deeply and to take account of what has been established by considering facts as they really are.
In all social theory valuations are made, in the sense of evaluating what is done and being done, and also in the sense of evaluating social aims and saying what ought to be aimed at and ought to be done.

Theory was not, as the Brahmins thought, the condition of practice, and neither was it, as the Buddhists were beginning to believe, the justification of practice.
Theory, in Nagarjuna's view, was the enemy of all forms of legitimate practice, social, ethical and religious.
Theory must be undone through the demonstration that its Buddhist metaphysical conclusions and the Brahminical reasoning processes which lead to them are counterfeit, of no real value to genuinely human pursuits.

Changing the World: The Rhetoric of Revisionism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The impulse to change in the rhetoric of revisionism is driven, like its earlier avatars, by political and institutional motives—the desire to make a place for particular groups (currently, women and minorities) by making a place for their writing.
Theory can be important to reformers because, over the past two decades, it has institutionalized a habit of energetic self-critique that could help curb the utopian idealism that is so tempting to the rhetoric of revisionism.
Poststructuralist theory threatens the eighteenth-century ethics (“right feeling leads to right action,” “to know the good is to do it”) that founds Lauter's justification for his alternative canon and curriculum and that is his only substantial alternative to the traditional critical criteria supporting the existing ones.

Poetry and Repression: Revisionism from Blake to Stevens
It occurs at the end of The Anxiety of Influence, where Bloom, having identified five relations of sons to fathers (swerving, completing, emptying, displacing, diminishing, or, in Bloom's terms, clinamen, tessera, kenosis, daemonization, askesis), reaches his sixth "ratio," as he calls these relations, apophrades, the return of the dead.
His theory of influence requires a poetry which is wholly introverted and reflexive, an elevated and self-sufficing realm of discourse which itself provides all that is necessary for its interpretation.

It is highly relevant and vital to the understanding of the burgeoning American State that each of these consequences were not unfortunate accidents brought about by foreign "aggressors", but the result of a conscious and deliberate aggressive and war-mongering policy indulged in by the American State.
Ludwig von Mises: "But what is needed for a satisfactory solution of the burning problem of international relations is neither a new office with more committees, secretaries, commissioners, reports, and regulations, nor a new body of armed executioners, but the radical overthrow of mentalities and domestic policies which must result in conflict." - Omnipotent Government

But the criticism of modern revisionism was hampered by the ideas and practices of the Communist Party of China and the leaders of the several American and Canadian organizations which represented Maoism in North America (all of which declared themselves parties, and of which only scattered ghosts remain---the Revolutionary Communist Party being the prominent exception).

 Proletarian Revolution . . . Khrshchov's Revisionism
But Khrushchov's revisionism, which has emerged and gained ascendancy in the leadership of the CPSU, constitutes a major question of overall significance for the international communist movement with a vital bearing on the success or failure of the entire revolutionary cause of the international proletariat.
This line is clearly typified in Togliatti's theory of structural reform, which advocates the proletariat's attainment of the leadership of the state through the legal channels of bourgeois democracy and the socialist transformation of the national economy through such nationalization and planning as serve monopoly capital.
In international relations, Khrushchov's revisionism practises capitulation to U.S. imperialism; in the imperialist and capitalist countries it practises capitulation to the reactionary ruling classes; in the socialist countries it encourages the development of capitalist forces.
