This refered to a flag from the French Regime that was thought as being the flag of the Canadiens volounteers (not the French Royal troops) during the last victory of the French over the British at the Battle of Carillon on July 8th, 1758.
It was the Tricolor with the red torn off ; many French-Canadians felt that the Tricolor was too revolutionary, specially members of the St-Jn-Bte Society who are still a bit too catholic-folkloric to my taste.
This was a facsist, anti-Semitist, ultra-nationalist movement, and the black of the flag represented the fascism of Mussolini in Italy.

Barreto wanted Four Days to focus on the various factors that caused an idealistic college student like Fernando Gabeira (Pedro Cardoso) to move beyond political rallies, marches and Marxist posturing and join up with a guerrilla organization, the October 8th Revolutionary Movement (MR-8).
The book went on to become a major hit with Brazilian readers, chronicling Gabeira's experience as a 1960s underground revolutionary as well as his involvement in the 1969 kidnapping of American Ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick.
Barreto was only 14 when the MR-8 kidnapped Elbrick in Rio de Janeiro, and he vaguely remembers the TV and newspaper coverage.

FILM REVIEW -- `Four Days' a Thoughtful Thriller / Emotions, ideals explored in story of '69 kidnapping
A small guerrilla group calling itself the ``October 8th Revolutionary Movement'' used Elbrick as a hostage to deliver a Marxist manifesto and denounce the brutality of Brazil's right-wing military regime.
Elbrick's wife, Elvira (Caroline Kava), a well-bred hostess, fears the worst, and her wails of grief are the film's glancing reminder of what terrorism can mean.
The story recounts the kidnapping in September 1969 of the U.S. ambassador to Brazil, Charles Burke Elbrick (Arkin), by leftist radicals.

More emotional drama than conventional political-thriller, Barreto's film traces the various factors that caused idealistic college students like Fernando (Pedro Cardoso) and CZ sar (Selton Mello) to move beyond political rallies, marches and Marxist posturing, and join-up with Maria (Fernanda Torres), leader of the guerrilla organization, October 8th Revolutionary Movement (MR-8).
Based on the best-selling book by Fernando Gabeira, one of Elbrick's kidnappers, Four Days in September emphasizes the human side of its student terrorists.
It's a riveting history lesson brought to life by the rich performances of its young Brazilian cast.

 Four Days in September
The junta has imposed martial law, cracking down on demonstrations by students like Fernando Gabeira (Pedro Cardoso), who consequently joins the only opposition party he can find -- the October 8th Revolutionary Movement, or MR8.
At the center of the whirlwind is Ambassador Charles Elbrick (Alan Arkin), a distinguished veteran, accomplished diplomat and devoted husband who's been assigned the ugly task of representing America's interests in a nation in the grip of a military junta.
Elbrick is the kind of off-center character Arkin plays best, and he's at the top of his game here.

Gabeira, too, gets intimate moments that reveal much about his depth of character, especially when he clashes with the group's military leader (Matheus Nachtergaele), who feels Gabeira is just a middle-class kid not strong enough to die or kill for his cause or his compatriots.

 Movie Database - tvguide.com
Young journalist Fernando Gabeira (Pedro Cardoso) falls in with the "October 8th Revolutionary Movement," or "MR-8," a group of radical leftists who hope to effect political change through guerrilla tactics and civil unrest.
Taking inspiration from the real-life Gabeira's published memoirs, Barreto's film is less concerned with history than the fate of idealism and the wide-reaching effects of oppression.
With the exception of two veteran guerrillas who come aboard to direct the inexperienced MR-8, there really aren't any bad guys here: The kidnappers are ultimately the victims, and Elbrick is carefully presented as a largely sympathetic, squarely MOR liberal.
