In Carver's tale the friend is blind; in Lawrence's it's the husband, but in both stories the climax is the communion between the two men while the wife is absent: In "Cathedral" she's asleep, in "The Blind Man" she's in another room.
Carver chronicled the lives of the lumpen proletariat and the demoralized white working class with a sensitivity and eye for detail unmatched in his contemporaries and, many would argue, his followers.
Carver's refusal to acknowledge the obvious similarities between his own story and Lawrence's speaks to the depths of his insecurity -- as a working class writer in a literary world run by an Ivy-League-educated elite -- about his own place in the canon.

Rex Carver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rex Carver is a fictional British private eye created by the prolific thriller writer Victor Canning.
Although a private eye by profession, Carver knows a number of people who work for a shadowy British undercover agency and he frequently becomes involved with both enemy agents and semi-hostile British agents during his adventures.
It is by no means a stretch to call these books spy thrillers or to consider Carver himself a secret agent of sorts.

Carver presented us with a humble, lovable and yet poor milkman (Tevye), quite pleased with what he has, but always hoping for a little bit more money in his purse (as he says, “If I were a rich man…”).
What makes his character all the more lovable is his monologues with the Almighty/God (as well as the audience), for this is where the pureness of his heart shines through.
In this brief (and musical) contemplation, Tevye weighs the two choices he has, and finally comes to the conclusion that marrying Motel would be mouch better for his daughter, ultimately scoring points with the audience.

She is proud of the high standards achieved by the press, both in copy-editing and proofreading, which are increasingly being neglected at other presses as a cost-containment measure, and in design: UI Press books are still designed individually, while many presses use a "one-design-fits-all" approach for series books.
These kinds of changes keep things fresh for Carver, who’s taken pleasure in the growth of the press since she arrived as managing editor in 1985.
