Hunt, recruited from Parkdale, made his debut with Richmond in the then-VFL in 1968.
In 2005, Hunt was involved in a controversy when he let slip that Aboriginal footballer Leon Davis was "as fl as a dog", during a football broadcast on 3AW.
During a visit to Byron Bay to attend a wedding function in October 2005, Hunt and his 28 year old son Matthew Hunt were bashed by a group of approximately 15 teenagers.

Sir Rex Masterman Hunt CMG (1926-) was the British governor of the Falkland Islands between 1980 and September 1985 with a 3 month gap between 2 April 1982 and 25 June 1982 owing to the Falklands War.
Rex Hunt joined the Royal Air Force as a cadet in 1941 and was enlisted as an airman in 1944.
