  REXX
REXX (Restructured Extended Executor) is a programming language which was developed at IBM.
REXX syntax looks similar to PL/I, but has fewer notations; this makes it harder to parse (by program) but easier to use.
REXX was designed and first implemented as an ‘own-time’ project between 1979 and 1982 by Mike Cowlishaw of IBM, originally as a scripting programming language to replace the languages EXEC and EXEC 2.

Rexx Language   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
REXX is a programming language designed by Michael Cowlishaw of IBM UK Laboratories.
In his own words: "REXX is a procedural language that allows programs and algorithms to be written in a clear and structured way." REXX doesn't look that different from any other procedural language.
What makes REXX different from most other languages is that it is also designed to be used as a macro language by arbitrary application programs.

What is programming language? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Each language has a unique set of keywords (words that it understands) and a special syntax for organizing program instructions.
Assembly languages are similar to machine languages, but they are much easier to program in because they allow a programmer to substitute names for numbers.
The choice of which language to use depends on the type of computer the program is to run on, what sort of program it is, and the expertise of the programmer.
