 Reykjanes Ridge Seismology
The overall character of the Reykjanes Ridge is strongly influenced by the Iceland Plume.
OBS deployments along the northern Reykjanes Ridge (near 62.5 N) (Mochizuki et al., 2000) have detected numerous, mostly normal faulting events that occur on the flanks between the AVS's (implying that they are probably not associated with magmatism).
Reykjanes Ridge, in being fairly linear, provides a place to investigate the along-axis variability of upwelling (and melt production) that is not dominated by the overwhelming geometrical and thermal effects of fracture zone offsets.

 Reykjanes Peninsula
Like most settlements on Reykjanes, Vogar owes its history to changes and developments in fishing, such as in the early years of this century, when the replacement of traditional six- and eight-oared boats by much larger motor-driven vessels brought the need for harbours large enough to accommodate them.
Once the largest trading centre in Reykjanes and centre of the Danish trading monopoly this bustling port disappeared in the space of a few hours on the night of January 9th 1799, swept away by a violent storm and tidal waves.
One of the most historic towns in Reykjanes, Grindavík was for centuries the subject of fierce international competition, culminating in 1532 in a four-nation battle which saw a mixed band of Danes, Hanseatic merchants and Icelanders join together to defeat a force of English merchants.

The standard of living in Reykjanes is relatively high, with well-developed public health care and an educational system up to university level, while an ample number of play schools are run by the local municipalities.
Reykjanes is also home to a number of restaurants and hotels, and the vibrant culture and nightlife of Iceland's capital is within easy reach.

Area of investigation is the Reykjanes Ridge between 58°N and 60°N (Figure 1).
South of Iceland, the typical axial high of the Reykjanes Ridge steadily decreases in amplitude until about 59°N where a well defined median valley is flanked by rift mountains to the NW and SE.

Reykjanes Peninsula is the onshore continuation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
The rift valley that lies at the crest of the ridge extends in a northeast direction along the peninsula, from Reykjanes, in the southwest, to Vogar and the airport road, in the northeast.

Global Volcanism Program | Additional Reports | Volcanoes of the Atlantic Ocean
Seismologists noted that the long-period character of the seismicity suggested that it was related to magma movement, associated with an intrusive episode or an eruption onto the sea floor.
During the investigation of the Reykjanes Ridge, the Ewing followed and surveyed the ridge axis from 52.8°N to 63.0°N. More than 100 discrete volcanic cones were identified within one 65-km-long, 10-km-wide strip, with many additional cones on the flanks.
Earthquake swarms are common on the Reykjanes Ridge and its landward continuation on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

It would appear that it is only as the focus of the hot-spot has migrated away from the ridge-axis, then, that this level of eruptive volcanism has waned, leading to a "collapse" of swollen topographic highs to yield the highly segmented, tectonically fractured fabrics we observe penetrating into the ocean crust today.
One experiment was done on the slowly-spreading Reykjanes ridge at 57 deg 30 min N (Sinha et al.) and the other on the Galapagos spreading center near 91 deg 30 min W (Ito et al.), where the spreading rate is intermediately fast.
Schilling (1973) argued that the chemical anomalies on the Reykjanes Ridge were a consequence of southward flow of the Iceland plume and its mixing with ambient upper mantle material (asthenosphere).

Steeped in a rich vein of history, folklore and tradition, the region is also home to some of the world's greatest geological wonders, including the Reykjanes Ridge, meeting place of the Eurasian and American continental plates.
Teeming with a wealth of bird and marine life whose habitats lie amid some of Iceland¹s most spectacular coastal scenery, Reykjanes is the natural choice for all lovers of the outdoors, with activities ranging from bird and whalewatching, to horse riding, deep-sea angling, or freshwater fishing.

The main aim of the RISP-Project was to study the crust and mantle structure under Iceland, the Reykjanes Ridge SW of Iceland and the transition from Iceland to the Reykjanes Ridge by explosion deep seismic sounding.
The crustal structure of Iceland mainly differs by its thickness (up to 15 km) from that along the 10 my isochron of the western flank of the Raykjanes Ridge; but the subcrustal structure is - as a result of a mantle diapir (p-velocities of 7.0 - 7.6 km/s) - fundamental different.
The northern part of the Reykjanes Ridge seems not essentially be influenced by the Iceland Hot-Spot.

Fracture trace maps were generated from air photos of three areas in the Reykjanes fissure swarm at scales of 1:14,400, 1:25,000 and 1:36,000.
When data are combined and normalized to the map area, the best-fit power-law curve has an exponent of 1.66, indicating that the fissure swarm as a whole grows in a self-similar manner.
Measurement at all scales show a greater range of azimuths for shorter fractures than for longer ones, indicating that the shorter, spreading-subperpendicular fractures are scavenged during the linkage that occurs during population evolution.

Evident magnetic stripes begin their symmetry along the ridge crest which is identified as the large pink line running across the middle of the image, and having subsequent smaller and less evident stripes as the distance increases from the ridge.
