Molecular Evolution of the Paramyxoviridae and Rhabdoviridae Multiple-Protein-Encoding P Gene -- Jordan et al. 17 (1): ...
1.—Negative-strand RNA genomes of the Paramyxoviridae and the Rhabdoviridae.
The amino portion of the V protein is encoded in the same frame as the P protein, while the carboxyl cysteine-rich region of the V protein is encoded in the -1 frame relative to P. P-cut and P-total are defined in the text.
B, In VSV taxa of the Rhabdoviridae family, the P gene encodes the C protein in the +1 frame relative to the P protein.

Virus Evolution Workgroup: 1999 Workshop Abstract
Paramyxoviridae and Rhabdoviridae are families of negative strand RNA viruses belonging to the order Mononegavirales.
In Rhabdoviridae, both VSV clades have patterns of nucleotide variation that indicate conservation of the P reading frame by negative selection and relatively rapid evolution of the C frame encoded by the same nucleotides.
Thus elucidation of the molecular evolutionary dynamics of the Paramyxoviridae and Rhabdoviridae P gene multi-coding sequences illustrates one example of the profound effect of quasispecies population dynamics on RNA virus biology.

Oita virus 296/1972 was isolated from the blood of a wild horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus cornutus (Temminck) in 1972.
These morphological characteristics of the virions are consistent of that of viruses in the family Rhabdoviridae.
Distance matrix analysis of this gene sequence with those of other rhabdoviruses isolated from mammals disclosed the discrete position of this virus in the phylogenic tree of rhabdoviridae infecting mammals and we renamed this virus as Oita rhabdovirus.

 RHABDOVIRIDAE
Rhabdoviridae is a virus family within the Mononegavirales order, which also contains the Bornaviridae, Filoviridae, and Paramyxoviridae families.
Rhabdoviridae contains six genera: vesiculovirus, lyssavirus, ephemerovirus, norvirhabdovirus, cytorhabdovirus, and nucleorabdovirus.
The Rhabdoviridae family contains only two viruses that infect humans, however, which are rabies virus (RABV) and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV.) These two viruses are in the lyssavirus and vesiculovirus genera respectively.

Viruses of the family Rhabdoviridae are perhaps more widely distributed in nature than those of any other virus family.
In addition to numerous plant rhabdoviruses, more than 70 rhabdoviruses of vertebrates have been recognized, to say nothing of the hundreds waiting to be identified.
The viruses of the family Rhabdoviridae known to infect mammals, including humans, have been classified into two genera: the Vesiculovirus genus stemming from vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and the Lyssavirus genus otherwise known as the rabies and rabieslike viruses.

The mechanism of virus entry into host cells is unknown, but it is reasonable to assume that the glycoprotein as the only known transmembrane protein of the virion particle mediates the adsorption and the penetration process.
The genetics of filoviruses are probably similar to those of the other two nonsegmented negative-stranded RNA virus families, Paramyxoviridae and Rhabdoviridae.
These data suggest that all nonsegmented negative-strand RNA viruses are derived from a common progenitor and support the classification of the families Filoviridae, Paramyxoviridae and Rhabdoviridae in the order Mononegavirales.
