Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne - Juergen Kellermann
In his Ph.D.-research he established a molecular phylogeny of Rhamnaceae, which is the basis for a revised generic classification of the family in Australia.
Rhamnaceae is a cosmopolitan family of approximately 925 species, and is represented by approx.
Most of the species (90%) belong to a distinct group of Rhamnaceae that is almost endemic to Australia, and which can be recognised by the presence of minute star-shaped hairs on stems, leaves and/or flowers.

The Buckthorn Family, Rhamnaceae is a family made up worldwide of about 50 genera and 900 species. It is represented in our area by several shrubs or small trees belonging to two genera, Rhamnus and Frangula.
All of the Rhamnaceae have bark that acts as a potent purgative.
When reclassified, Pursh's name was used as the specific epithet to honor his role in classifying the Lewis and Clark plants.

Rhamnaceae are recognisable by their toothed, stipulate leaves that often have strong, parallel secondary veins and scalariform tertiary venation.
Their flowers have stamens opposite the often clawed petals, a hypanthium with a nectary inside, and a valvate calyx with sepals that are ridged down the middle on their inner surfaces.

They were often associated with Rhamnaceae, since both have stamens opposite the petals, and Takhtajan (1997) placed them near Proteanae, in his Rosidae; Proteanae have stamens opposite their tepals, but are otherwise very different.
Molecular data do not link them unambiguously with any other core eudicot, and they are definitely not nested high in the group.
Although Vitis and relatives and Leea are morphologically distinguishable, there are numerous features that unite the two; inclusion in a single family seems resaonable.
