Rhamnus frangula can be recognized by the alternate, shiny leaves with entire margins (no teeth) and the densely brown hairy buds.
As is the case with Rhamnus cathartica, it produces numerous fruits, readily eaten by birds which carry the seeds to new locations.
Cut stumps sprout vigorously and control methods generally require the cut stumps to be treated with an herbicide.

The hydroxyanthracene glycosides in Rhamnus are poorly absorbed from the small intestine but they are hydrolysed by bacteria to the active aglycones, which are partly absorbed in the colon and are excreted predominantly in the faeces but also in urine, giving it an orange colour.
Rhamnus purshiana should not be given to children under 12 years of age.
Using Rhamnus purshiana is not recommended at all, but special care should be taken to avoid using it and another laxative at the same time.
