In the county, the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county is $30,418, and the median income for a family is $35,580.

RHEA COUNTY lies on the left bank of the Tennessee River, and is divided between the valley of East Tennessee and the Cumberland table-land.
The act for the establishment of Rhea County was passed December 3, 1807, and January 25, 1808, the county court was organized at the house of William Henry, situated at Big Spring about half way between the present towns of Darwin and Dayton.
Prior to the division of the county in 1836, Washington was a flourishing town.

Rhea County was created in 1807 out of Roane County, and named for Revolutionary Soldier and member of the United States Congress, John Rhea.
Bordered by the Tennessee River on the east and the Cumberland Plateau on the west, Rhea County is rich in natural beauty.
Of historic note, Rhea County is home to the famous Scopes trial (or monkey trial) where William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow debated the theory of evolution in the county courthouse.

A lawsuit to halt pervasive illegal religious practices in public schools in Rhea County, Tennessee was filed in the courtroom of Chief Judge Edgar, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, on April 26 by the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
The Foundation sent an official letter of complaint on Sept. 27, 2000, to Susan Porter, Rhea County Superintendent, who is named as a defendant, enumerating the various prevailing Supreme Court decisions which the practices violate.
As a result of the letter, the Rhea County Commission on October 17, 2000, adopted a unanimous resolution approving the bible classes.
