 Rheostats
A good rule of thumb is to use a rheostat equal in value to the fan resistance — this will reduce the voltage across the fan to half the supply, 6 volts.
Manufacturers such as Vishay quote a wattage value based on the current-carrying capacity of the rheostat wire or coating, and higher-resistance rheostats in a model range use thinner stuff than the low-resistance ones.
For wire-wound rheostats only, the manufacturer allows some overload when only a fraction of the turns on the rheostat are carrying current — the hot section loses some heat to the unused cold wire by conduction.

 Fixing Rheostats
Rheostat is a fancy name for a variable controller and you can fix them.
A rheostat is a variable controller that directs the amount of current flowing to many smaller appliance components.
As the probes are moved along the rheostat wire, the reading should change incrementally.

Rheostats are similar to potentiometers; the rheostats are controlled by a knob that controls the voltage intake using resistance.
If you would like all fans on one rheostat, there wouldn't be a problem with using a 25W rheostat, however those run upward to $40 a peice.
This is done by the rheostat using that extra fan power at the lower side of resistance.

RC linear rheostats are made up of one or more cylindrical pipes in porcelain, on which the resistive alloy wire is wound and of one or more contacts sliding on the winding along cylinders generators moved via a knob or otherwise.
Choice of materials: the special porcelain cylindrical pipe offers a high mechanical and thermal shock resistance; the resistive alloy is generally costantan with a neglectable temperature coefficient, supporting plates and protection sheets are oven painted at a high temperature thus guaranteeing colour permanence and life.

The main feature of a rheostat would be to generate lots of heat at the controls.
A rheostat is just an adjustable resistor that is in series with the load and has to disapate a large amount of power depending on the load and setting of the rheostat.
The later are often mis called as rheostats, but actually use electronic switch (Triacs) which control the turn of of the power 120 times a second.

 Load Based Analysis
Imagine a rheostat tied to a fixed resistor as a transistor amplifier: The rheostat is working against that fixed resistor just as a transistor works against its collector load resistor.
As the rheostat's resistance is decreased, more current is made to flow through the fixed Load Resistor, which causes a corresponding increase in the voltage dropped across that Load Resistor.
As the rheostat's resistance is increased, less current is made to flow through the fixed Load Resistor, which causes a corresponding decrease in the voltage dropped across that Load Resistor.

To start with, let’s explain what a Rheostat is being that you will hear about it often, but rarely what it does or how it works.
The most direct explanation without getting all into electrical resistance and such, is that a Rheostat is a small device that controls the voltage flow via a dial or knob.
A BayBus is a small box with several Rheostats that let you control the speed of multiple fans.

rheostat. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Typically a rheostat consists of a resistance element equipped with two contacts, or terminals, by which it is attached to a circuit: a fixed contact at one end and a sliding contact that can be moved along the resistance element.
In this way the current through the circuit can be increased or decreased.
Rheostats are widely used for such purposes as controlling the speed of electric motors and dimming electric lights, but they have been replaced in many applications by systems based on semiconductor devices that waste far less power.

Ceramide/Long-Chain Base Phosphate Rheostat in Saccharomyces cerevisiae: Regulation of Ceramide Synthesis by Elo3p and Cka2p.In fact, elo3 mutants were found to accumulate high levels of LCBs and LCBPs.
In order to gain further insight into the function of the rheostat in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we searched for mutants that are synthetically lethal with a deletion of the LCB3 gene encoding LCBP phosphatase.
The cka2 mutants, on the other hand, exhibited only 25 to 30% of the in vitro CS activity found in wild-type membranes, indicating that the alpha' subunit of CK2 kinase is necessary for full activation of CS.

The load control rheostat is used in starting the engine and in controlling the load applied to the engine by the dynamometer during steady state operation.
The rheostat controls the current to the field coils of the motor/generator, increasing this current increases the torque of the device.
Once the engine is running, move the function switch to the Generator or Load position and move the Load Rheostat to a position that maintains steady engine operation.

Potentiometer as a rheostat : DC CIRCUITS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-08)
In its simplest configuration, a potentiometer may be used as a rheostat by simply using the wiper terminal and one of the other terminals, the third terminal left unconnected and unused:
If your potentiometer has a high resistance (as measured between the two outer terminals), the motor might not move at all until the wiper is brought very close to the connected outer terminal.
As you can see, motor speed may be made variable using a series-connected rheostat to change total circuit resistance and limit total current.

If you can be sure the load is constant, like a light or motor that runs all the time, you can use a rheostat, adjusted to give the correct voltage at the (constant) load current.
However if the load turned out to be.5 ampere, the rheostat could be set to 7 ohms, for a total of 12.
With a rheostat, turning one light off (or having one burn out) will raise the voltage to all that are left.
