Several health issues are of concern in the Boston Terrier: cataracts (both juvenile and adult type), cherry eye, luxating patellas, deafness, heart murmur, and allergies.
This breed originated in Boston, Massachusetts, in the late 19th century, by combining the English White Terrier with the English Bulldog, and was originally called the Boston Bull.
Boston Terriers were first acknowledged by the American Kennel Club in 1893.

Rhett is the official mascot of the Boston University Terriers and has been the BU mascot since 1922.
The often snarling, bi-pedal fl and white Boston Terrier was named after the male lead in Margaret Mitchell 's " Gone with the Wind," because of his affection for Scarlet, BU's primary color.
Like all mascots, Rhett and the terrier logo are ubiquitous at athletic events.

Rhett became an official mascot in 1922 after a student dispute over whether BU's mascot should be a terrier or a moose.
Originally, students objected to the terrier because of the size of the dog, but the speed, aggressiveness and courage of the terrier finally convinced students that the breed of bull dog was worthy.
Terriers usually weigh between 40 and 50 pounds, and are the only animal unique to Boston, which helped it win the coveted position as BU's mascot.
