Terry Pratchett's first novel for children for five years, The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents was today announced as the 2001 winner.
For those of you who have not yet surrendered to the Pratchett phenomenon, the feeling you are left with on reaching the end of a Discworld book is the reading equivalent of that glow you have at the coffee and cognac stage of a sumptuous four-course meal in an exquisite restaurant deep in rural France.
Pratchett demonstrates just how great the distance is between one- or two-joke writers and the comic masters whose work will still be read well into the next century.
