Since the Rhine flows from the Alps, a precondition of its existence is the uplifting of the Alps, which began in the Alpine Orogeny.
These highlands helped to divert the Rhine to the west; however, the Rhine's course is set by the Rhine graben, a rift that opened in the Eocene and Oligocene periods between the western Alps and the central Alps, caused by their moving in slightly different directions.

The Rhine Gorge is a popular name for the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a 65 km section of the River Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen.
The gorge was carved out during a much more recent uplifting to leave the river contained within steep walls 200 m high, the most famous feature being the Lorelei.
This part of the Rhine features strongly in folklore, such as a legendary castle on the Rhine being the setting for the opera Gotterdammerung.

Marksburg Castle is the only Rhine Gorge castle intact - others are largely ruins - supposedly Napoleon knocked most of them down in a few fell swoops.
I like the K-D boat that floats thru the Rhine Gorge as only from this vantage point can you see both sides of the river at once.

The Rhine gorge is attractive in a stark way in March, some might say bleak, until April, when things start to blossom and sprout.
Boppard is a little larger than the others and has a bit more going on at that time of year than the other towns.
South of the gorge, Ruedesheim is a great little town too.

South of Koblenz: Boppard, St. Goar, Oberwesel, Bacharach are all interesting towns in between Koblenz and Bingen in the most attractive part of the Rhine gorge.
Marksburg Castle in Braubach is the best castle tour on the Rhine - get there by taking the train from Koblenz or ferry across the river from St. Goar and take the train from there.
St. Goar's hostel is small and very cheap with a tremendous view of the Rhine (3 castles visible.) You can tour the castle ruins just above the hostel (Rheinfels.) If you enjoy hiking, the trail along the top of the cliffs between St. Goar and Oberwesel is very scenic.

The important part is an der Lahn - I rode the Rhine River George and the Lahn River Gorge today.
The Rhine is much bigger than the Lahn, and has more spectacular man made things, mostly castles, to see.
Everything was on a much smaller scale than on the Rhine and there was a sense of peace that wasn't present along the busy Rhine.
